I pasted all answers first and kept thinking for more than 10 minutes to see which one shall be placed first.! It was really a hard task for me. I think we cant come up now with a term that can be generalized! So it is a cocktail!

العصف الفكري

Explanation:
This term has widely been translated as (العصف الفكري) to the point that it's a little bit established now. I don't feel comfortable about it, but I have no better substitute.

In retrospect, I think the nearest Arabic expression to this term is (قدح زناد الفكر) ..
However, the problem starts when you have the term within different contexts, like brainstorming meeting where managers of a company, for example, meet to concentrate and come up with new creative solutions for the challenges they face.

هو" يتامل الافكار المبدئية" وهم "يتبادلون الافكار المبدئية

Explanation:
if a single person is "brainstorming" then he is :يتأمل الافكار المبدئية
if more than one person are involved in this "brainstorming" then they are :يتبادلون الافكار المبدئية
i suggest the word "المبدئية" because in brainstorming nothig is aggreed upon or decided yet.
