Source text - English Financial results – first half of 2007 Overall in the first half of 2007 we made great progress towards reaching our end of year goal of building a significant card business outside the UK. We posted a PBT (profit before tax) of £302m which is a 77% increase on H2 2006. This result contains some significant achievements, as well as some areas where we need to focus our attention in the second half of the year. Western Europe • New cards recruited across the four major markets in Europe (Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal) for January to June totalled 189,300. • Income for H1 2007 in Europe was 19% up on the same period in 2006 at £113 million. Against our STP, Europe was actually £13.9 million behind plan, and this shortfall is driven by lower ECT (extended credit takers) balances across Spain, Italy and Germany, combined with a high level of dormant accounts • As a result of reduced income however, impairment has declined by £11.2 million to compensate. Germany demonstrated a strong collection performance whilst Italy had predominantly lower outstanding balances and some improvements in the delinquency rates (customers defaulting on payments). • Overall cost reductions also provided a further benefit of £6.5 million against the STP.
