Is that the reason why the world doesn’t like them? Paweł Walewski Try wearing watch on your right hand and set the time. It is the best way to put yourself in the position of someone left-handed. Apparently it is not a comfortable situation – not only watches, also scissors, nail files, cameras, musical instruments, domestic appliances, were designed with the right-handed in mind. In Poland there is currently a shortage of shops with products for the left-handed, even though at least one person in ten prefers to use left hand rather than right – consequently such shops could be very popular. That is the assumption taken a long time ago by the English, who even established an international club of the left-handed, number of its members (membership is free) exceeded already 23 thousand. Source text - English On 4 October, the European Commission is due to adopt a decision on the annual allocation, by Member State, of credit appropriations from the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) for 2007-2013. The regulation on the EFF was formally adopted by the Council on 27 July, following political agreement by European fisheries ministers on 19 June. The European Fisheries Fund will provide a total of €3.849 billion (2004 prices) in Community credit appropriations over the 2007-2013 period. 0.8% of this amount will go to the Commission to fund technical assistance measures. In addition, €273 million has been earmarked for Romania and Bulgaria, which will join the EU on 1st January 2007. The current 25 Member States (in reality, all except Luxemburg) will, therefore, share a total of €3.545 billion. Of this sum, €2.611 billion will go to the poorest regions (regions eligible for convergence objective funding). In return, Mercosur wants a substantial increase in the size of tariff quotas for the import of their key agricultural products into the EU, and a softening of the attached conditions. The volume of the tariff quotas requested by the South Americans for beef, poultry and rice is three times greater than that offered by the EU in September 2004, five times greater for wheat and four times greater for bananas. Mercosur also requests a 200,000 tonne quota for sugar, even though it accepted in 2004 that sugar would be offered indirectly by the EU, through ethanol (for which Brussels has already set a 1 million tonne quota), given the sensitivity of the product. Source text - English With regard to the sanitarian aspects of the avian influenza, the first comment that should be made is that, in the contrary to the other world regions, the European countries have been able to successfully limit the wide spreading of the disease to the wild birds (still 13 countries have registered at least one case of bird infected by the virus H5N1) and to avoid the contamination of the European poultry flocks, except only 5 cases located in Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary and Sweden. Only Romania has been confronted to a large number of cases (172). Consequently, not a single of human contamination has been recorded which indicates that the perspectives of the outbreak of pandemic is not a relevant question neither for the time being nor in the coming months. However, this should not prevent us to draw the attention of the European authorities on the differences between the EU Member States of the intervention capacities of the national bodies in charge of the health and safety issues. In that respect, the assessment of the structures already established in the “new” Member States indicates that they are not in a position to respond with the same efficiency as the ones existing the “old” Member States and need therefore a greater support from the European Union.	Translation - Polish Jeżeli chodzi o aspekt higieny publicznej w grypie ptaków, pierwsze co trzeba zauważyć to to, że w przeciwieństwie do innych regonów krajom Europejskim udało się skutecznie ograniczyć szersze rozprzestrzenianie się choroby tylko do dzikiego ptactwa (13 krajów zanotowało co najmniej jeden przypadek zakażenia wirusem H5N1) jak również uniknąć zakażenia europejskich stad drobiu, z wyjątkiem 5 przypadków w: Danii, Francji, Niemczech, Szwecji i na Węgrzech. Tylko Rumunia stanęła w obliczu dużej liczby przypadków (172). Tak więc nie odnotowano ani jednego przypadku zakażenia człowieka co wskazuje, że perspektywa wybuchu pandemii nie jest istotnym problemem przynajmniej teraz i przez kilka kolejnych miesięcy. Nie powinno to nas jednakże powstrzymywać od zwrócenia uwagi organów UE na różnice, w dziedzinie zdolności krajowych jednostek odpowiedzialnych za sprawy bezpieczeństwa i higieny, jakie występujące pomiędzy Państwami Członkowskimi UE. W tym zakresie ocena struktur istniejących w "nowych" Państwach Członkowskich wskazuje, że nie są one w stanie odpowiadać na zagrożenia z taką samą skutecznością, co te istniejące w „starych” Państwach Członkowskich. Co za tym idzie potrzebują one większej pomocy ze strony Unii Europejskiej.

Source text - Polish § 3 Agent nie może żądać, ani przyjmować zapłaty należności X, chyba że Strony niniejszej umowy postanowią inaczej. § 4 Agent zobowiązuje się do podejmowania wszelkich czynności niezbędnych do ochrony praw i interesów X w zakresie realizowanych wspólnie kontraktów eksportowych. § 5 X zobowiązuje się do przekazywania Agentowi żądanych przez niego informacji i materiałów, w tym materiałów reklamowych, o produktach oferowanych przez X, niezbędnych do należytego wykonywania niniejszej umowy oraz do informowania na bieżąco o wszelkich zmianach w tym zakresie. § 6 1. Wynagrodzenie, o którym mowa w ust. 1 będzie wypłacane Agentowi dopiero po wpływie na rachunek bankowy X zapłaty za towar od kontrahenta, o którym mowa powyżej, w terminie 14 dni od daty doręczenia X przez Agenta prawidłowo wystawionego rachunku/faktury (tj. w oparciu o dane otrzymane od X), na rachunek bankowy wskazany na wystawionym rachunku lub w inny sposób ustalony prze strony niniejszej umowy. 3. Strony postanawiają, że w przypadku, gdy realizacja umowy i/lub/ płatności kontrahenta zagranicznego, o którym mowa w ust. 1, będzie następowała w częściach, Agentowi będzie przysługiwało wynagrodzenie prowizyjne płatne proporcjonalnie, także w częściach, w miarę wpływu części zapłaty od tego kontrahenta, na rachunek bankowy MARBET. 4. Każdorazowo podstawę zapłaty wynagrodzenia należnego Agentowi stanowić będzie jego rachunek, bądź faktura prawidłowo wystawiona, po uzyskaniu potwierdzenia X o wpływie zapłaty za towar. 5. Wynagrodzenie prowizyjne, o którym mowa w niniejszym paragrafie, stanowić będzie jedyne i wyłączne wynagrodzenie Agenta za jego usługi objęte niniejszą umową.	Translation - English § 3 Agent cannot request nor collect payments due to X, unless the Parties to this Contract agree otherwise. § 4 Agent commits himself to undertake all actions necessary to protect rights and interests of X, within the scope of executed together, export contracts. § 5 X is obliged to furnish Agent free of charge, with information and materials requested by him, including advertising materials, about X’s products, necessary for the correct execution of this Contract, and also to keep Agent informed about any changes of these issues. § 6 1. For performing actions enumerated in this Contract, Agent will be entitled to remuneration constituting a commission fee of 4% of the sale price of goods, conducted with his participation (with his mediation), paid by the trading partners, without the cost of packaging and transport, this remuneration shell be paid in the currency of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland or in the Polish currency. For the purpose of its determination, NBP Exchange rate, of the day of abovementioned payment, made to the X’s account, is applied. The Parties establish the same system for foreign currency translation into the Polish currency for all the, related to this Contract, transactions between them. 2. Remuneration specified above in point 1, shell be paid to the Agent within 14 days of the date of the Principal receiving the trading partner’s payment to the X’s banking account. Payment of the commission fee will take place on the basis of invoice, correctly issued (i.e. based on the data received from X) by the Agent, 14 days after its receipt by the X. The aforementioned commission fee, specified above in point 1, shall be paid to the Agents account indicated on the issued invoice or by any other means agreed by the Parties. 3. The Parties agree, that in situation when completion of agreement and/or payment of the foreign specified in point 1, will be made in installments, the Agent will be entitled to commission fee, paid proportionately and also in installments, following payments made to X’s account by the trading partner. 4. Every payment, due to the Agent, shall be made on the basis of his, correctly issued, invoice, when X receives confirmation that the payment for the goods has reached its account. The commission fee mentioned in this paragraph will constitute the Agent’s sole remuneration for his services covered by this Contract.

Source text - English Machinery in Motion No person is to operate this machine unless they have been adequately trained and issued with a company certificate of competence. The exception to the above are those employees who are undergoing instruction and are being supervised by another employee who is competent. Prior to starting the machine the operator is to check all guards are in place and secure. No person is to place any part of their body near the moving parts of the machine, other than on the controls, whilst the engine is running. Extra care is to be taken when using double edged blades and extra length blades not to allow the blades to contact thighs and upper legs as they could cause sever lacerations. Down strokes should be stopped sufficiently far above the legs to prevent accidental contact. Personnel will also become fatigued quicker and must allow for short breaks or job rotation to prevent injuries. In areas where it is considered the public could be at risk a safety zone must be established around the cutting area to prevent public access. This will be done using either barrier tape or suitable barriers. Arisings are to be cleared away prior to removal of barriers. On no account is the machine to be left unattended. When not in use it is to be secured in the company vehicle. Należy to zrobić przy użyciu taśm odgradzających lub stosownych barier. Przed zdjęciem ogrodzenia należy usunąć wszystkie ścinki. W żadnym wypadku nie można pozostawić urządzeń bez nadzoru. Kiedy nie są używane należy zostawić je w samochodzie firmowym.

Source text - English 21 EU countries are producing sugar and are concerned by the reform. The European sugar sector represents 234 factories employing 60.000 industrial direct workers and 500.000 indirects persons (agriculture + subcontracting, transport, logistic etc). It is assumed that a reduction in quotas of about 100.000 tonnes means the closure of 1 factory in the “old” member states and of 2 or 3 factories in the “new” member states. The foreseen impact has been so far the loss of at least 25.000 direct industrial jobs and 125.000 indirect jobs (the loss of 1 direct job generally leads to the loss of 5 indirect jobs) affecting mainly rural areas. The recent decisions of many companies’ management in almost all member states to undertake a rationalisation of their production facilities demonstrate that our fears were justified. This year, about 37 closures took place from which: 19 without the abandon of production quotas (rationalisation) and 18 with the abandon of production quotas (for a total 1.13 million tonnes). According to the latest information, the following Member States introduced demands to the Commission: Italy, Spain, Sweden and Portugal. Ireland is still considering the application submitted by Greencore PLC. Companies had to submit their application to their Member States by 31st of July but the Member States have until 30th September to forward it to the Commission. Przewidywany skutek to co najmniej strata 25 000 miejsc pracy wśród bezpośrednich pracowników przemysłowych i 125 000 miejsc pracy wśród osób zatrudnionych pośrednio (utrata 1 miejsca pracy wśród osób zatrudnionych bezpośrednio przekłada się na likwidację 5 miejsc pracy u osób zatrudnionych pośrednio) dotykać będzie ona przede wszystkim obszary wiejskie. Niedawne decyzje zarządów wielu firm, w niemal wszystkich Państwach Członkowskich o podjęciu racjonalizacji aparatu produkcyjnego potwierdza, że nasze obawy były uzasadnione. Tego roku zamknięto około 37 zakładów z tego: 19 bez zrzeczenia się kwot produkcyjnych (racjonalizacji) i 18 ze zrzeczeniem się kwot produkcyjnych (łącznie na 1,13 mln ton). Zgodnie z najnowszymi informacjami następujące Państwa Członkowskie zgłosiły żądania do Komisji: Hiszpania, Portugalia, Szwecja i Włochy. Irlandia rozważa jeszcze wniosek złożony przez Greencore PLC. Przedsiębiorstwa muszą złożyć wnioski swoim Państwom Członkowskim do 31 września na przesłanie ich do Komisji.

My blog

I am a Polish translator and interpreter, I specialize in translating texts concerning law, business and real estates (ENG<-->PL), however I have also experience in translating diplomas, certificates and websites. Currently I work as a full-time translator and my daily output is 1500-3000 words. Besides translating I have also fair experience in consecutive interpreting, including work in solicitors office as well as in the Royal Court of Justice, the Crown and Magistrate Court.

I have started my adventure with translation almost five years ago and never stopped enjoying it. Right now I still work as a freelance translator, however due to increasing demand I have decided to establish a translation agency - 78 International, which offers translation into Polish from all major European languages.

In May 2004 I finally defended master thesis "Informational duties of an entrepreneur selling by means of an interactive webpage towards consumer" comparing Polish and EU regulation of this subject, which gained the highest mark.
Afterwards I moved to London, where for over a year I was studying English and recently passed Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency, and Cambridge Business English Certificate Higher.

Aiming to gain officially recognized qualifications in translation, in September 2005 I undertook Introduction to Translation course at the University of Westminster, and in January 2006 started Diploma in Translation course at the same university where I was studying for the Diploma in Translation exam of the Institute of Linguists.

From October 2006 to May 2007 I was enrolled in a postgraduate course at Westminster University leading to Master in Bilingual Translation (pending).
