Le grand déballage n'aura pas lieu. Lance Armstrong a abandonné les poursuites judiciaires engagées pour diffamation à l'encontre de Pierre Ballester et David Walsh et de leur éditeur (La Martinière), qui a publié L. A. confidentiel, les secrets de Lance Armstrong, un livre-enquête paru en France en juin 2004.
Le coureur américain a annoncé, lors du Tour de France 2006, qu'il s'estimait blanchi de toute accusation de dopage par un rapport commandité par l'Union cycliste internationale (UCI). "Nous n'utilisons pas de produits dopants et nous poursuivrons tous ceux qui disent le contraire", avait menacé le Texan, en 2004, après avoir tenté d'empêcher la publication du livre, qui s'est vendu à 65 000 exemplaires mais n'a pas paru aux Etats-Unis. "M. Armstrong a manifestement craint les trois jours de procès et les dizaines de témoins cités", commente Thibault de Montbrial, l'avocat des auteurs et de leur éditeur.
Pas de procès donc (initialement prévu les 3, 5 et 6 octobre), mais L. A. officiel - une suite à L. A. confidentiel -, qui paraît en France jeudi 19 octobre. Ce second ouvrage révèle les stratégies mises en oeuvre par le "clan" Armstrong pour préserver intacte la "légende" : le come-back gagnant d'un miraculé du cancer.
Il se nourrit surtout des témoignages sous serment déposés dans le cadre d'une procédure judiciaire ayant opposé Lance Armstrong à son ancien assureur SCA Promotions. Moyennant une police de 400 000 dollars, l'assureur texan s'était engagé, en 2001, à verser 9,5 millions de dollars de primes au coureur s'il remportait les Tours 2001, 2002, 2003 et 2004.
Après la publication de L. A. confidentiel, SCA bloqua les 5 millions de dollars qu'elle devait encore au coureur et mena sa propre enquête - détectives privés en renfort - pour vérifier la véracité des accusations de dopage contenues dans le livre.

New Doubts Surround Lance Armstrong.
There will be no big unveiling. Lance Armstrong has abandoned his defamation suit against Pierre Ballester and David Walsh and their editor (La Martinière), who published L.A. Confidential: The Secrets of Lance Armstrong, an investigative book printed in France in June 2004.
During the 2006 Tour de France, the American racer announced that he considered himself exonerated from all doping accusations by a report commissioned by the International Cycling Union (UCI). “We do not use performance enhancing drugs and we will pursue anyone who says otherwise”, threatened the Texan in 2004, after having tried to stop publication of the book, which has sold 65,000 copies but has not been published in the United States. “Mr. Armstrong was obviously worried about the three day trial and the number of witnesses called”, commented Thibault de Montbrial, lawyer for the authors and their editor.
So, no trial (initially scheduled for 3, 5 and 6 October) but, instead, L.A. Official – a follow-up to L.A. Confidential – will be published in France on Thursday 19 October. This second book reveals the strategies set up by the Armstrong “clan” to preserve his “legend” intact: the winning comeback of a miraculous cancer survivor.
It is based primarily on statements taken for a legal dispute between Lance Armstrong and his ex-insurer, SCA Promotions. In 2001, in exchange for a $400,000 policy, the Texan insurance company agreed to pay the cyclist a premium of $9.5 million should he win the 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 Tours.
Following the publication of L.A. Confidential, SCA blocked payment of the remaining $5 million still owed to Lance Armstrong and launched its own enquiry – supported by private detectives – to check the accuracy of the doping accusations included in the book.

El circuito de Interlagos acogerá la última carrera de la temporada y casi todos los pilotos tienen motivos para querer despedir el año con una victoria. Michael Schumacher la necesita para seguir aspirando al título de pilotos y Giancarlo Fisichella la quiere para dar el título de constructores a su equipo. Paradójicamente, el que menos necesita la victoria es el que más se juega en Brasil: Fernando Alonso.
Por su trabajo intensivo en Jerez y las declaraciones de su entorno se deduce que Michael Schumacher aún no ha dado el Mundial por perdido, a pesar de la enorme desventaja respecto a Alonso. Para sumar su octava corona, el alemán necesita ganar en Brasil y que el español no puntúe. Lo primero es casi una exigencia de Ferrari, que al menos cuenta con adjudicarse el Mundial de constructores, aunque también es una exigencia del propio Schumacher. Ganar la última carrera supondría el broche de oro a su exitosa carrera.
En Renault tienen claro que el objetivo de Schumacher es luchar por los dos títulos hasta el último momento. Así lo cree Bob Bell, director técnico del equipo francés: "No nos equivoquemos, Michael irá al máximo en Brasil, como hace siempre. Una de sus grandes características es que nunca se da por vencido y precisamente por ello ha estado probando en Jerez después del GP de Japón. Además, en Interlagos tendrá un motivo más para darlo todo. Será el último Gran Premio de su carrera y estoy seguro de que está decidido a finalizarlo de la mejor forma posible".

Everybody needs a win in Brazil, except Alonso
The final race of the season will be held at Interlagos where almost all the drivers have a good reason for wanting to finish the year with a win.
Michael Schumacher needs one to keep his Driver’s Championship title aspirations alive while Giancarlo Fisichella needs one to give his team the Constructor’s Championship. Paradoxically, the one who needs this win the least is the one for whom there is most at stake in Brazil: Fernando Alonso.
From his intensive preparations in Jerez and the declarations of his team, it seems that Michael Schumacher still has not given up hopes of winning the title, despite Alonso’s huge advantage going into the race. To win his eighth championship, not only must the German win in Brazil but the Spaniard must fail to score any points. The former is almost a requirement by Ferrari, who can at least content itself with the Constructor’s Championship, although it is a requirement for Schumacher himself. Wining the last race would be the crowning moment of his successful career.
The Renault team know very well that Schumacher aims to carry his fight for both titles to the chequered flag. Bob Bell, technical director of the French team, says: “Make no mistake, Michael will be racing flat out in Brazil, as always. His hallmark trait is that he never gives up, and that is why he has been testing in Jerez since Japan. And he has an extra reason to be going flat out in Interlagos. This will be the last race of his career, and I am sure he is determined to go out on a high.”
