About me

In 1984 I graduated from university with a teacher's diploma (comparable to the Master of Arts in the English-speaking world) in English and German Language and Literature Studies. In my diploma thesis, which also included a number of translations of poems, I dealt with the work of Sylvia Plath.

I have been teaching English and German at two secondary schools and at two secondary grammar schools in Berlin for 23 years now. As Head of English Department at one of the grammar schools I helped to organize work in the field of foreign language teaching between 1994 and 2001.

I also installed and maintained a computer language lab with 16 workstations and a Qube server at my school and made intense use of it together with my colleagues from the English Department. As much of the software we used comes from the English-speaking world, I inevitably started to read and translate an endless amount of help files and manuals, so that I am specialized in the field of computers (software, hardware), too.

From 1992 to 2002 I owned and ran a small language school offering English courses in the UK to German pupils. The pupils lived with host families and were taught by native speakers. During that time ca 1,000 people booked their courses with my company. I stayed in the UK for many times, i.e. almost all of my school holidays, learned how to set up a company, how to co-operate with native English business partners, how to deal with British banks and authorities (and how to drive on the wrong side of the road). From the translations point-of-view, this means that I am experienced in translating travel programmes, flyers for travel agencies, contracts with business partners in travelling etc.

Over the years I have developed an increasing interest in translating and interpreting gathering more and more experience in doing translations now and then. So my wife and I set up a small company offering translation and office management services in 2003. Due to the fact that teaching English and German at a German grammar school has become unbelievably time-consuming, I have been working for mainly one customer so far – a company in the crane trading business. I translated two company flyers for them, a tower cranes rental nontract. Numerous mini-jobs I did for them comprise business letters, e-mails and fax documents, many phoning assistance jobs. I also interpreted for a few hours during negotiations with English-speaking customers.

A few months ago I decreased the number of my lessons to teach at school so that I have got more time for the translating jobs now.
