| I love languages. I speak native English, fluent French and German. I can get by in Welsh, Maori, Italian and Dutch; I struggle on with Russian, Arabic, Scots Gaelic, Lowland Scots, Spanish and Mandarin.
My favourite language is Scots Gaelic, the oldest surviving language of Britain, pre-dating the Roman conquest. It is spoken mostly in Canada and Newfoundland but also in Scotland and a few other Scottish settled places. It is not widely spoken outside its own language community. It sounds very musical and beautiful, like the flowing hills of the Western Isles. Slainte!
