JOHN LORING
TIFFANY(“TY”)设计总监JOHN LORING(“JL” for short below)先生无时无刻都是一位编辑。

JOHN LORING
Chief Editor, Design Director, and Spokesman
Interviewer: ***** Photographer: *****
Mr. John Loring, Tiffany’s Design Director, has been an editor from start to finish. For the past 29 years, he has been editing designers’ works everyday, deciding what will be sent to the production department, and what will be thrown in the trash. His daily chore consists of editing Tiffany’s historical archives, which provides much of the material for his books. Actually, being an editor is only his part-time job. Writing books is his true occupation. From 1979 to this day, he has completed over 21 works for Tiffany. The subjects dabbled in include: table settings, wedding banquets, cookbooks, holiday celebrations, past designers, the Tiffany family, flowered jewelry, photography, an assortment of patterned jewelry, and just about anything else you can think of. There’s still one topic I'd like to look at the most, which is something he never planned to write about: himself.
Everything we want to know about him as one of the most prolific jewelry designers in history, anything having to do with the history of designer jewelry and design style, and all about Tiffany's, is more than one could ever imagine..
Question: Last year’s published book, Tiffany Colored Gems, is the 21st trademark book you composed. In comparison to 1981’s debut work, The Tiffany Table Settings, what do you feel makes them different?
Answer: Every time you write a book, you learn a little more. Just like in writing a magazine article, every time you leave your own personal world and enter into another, this process is a type of education. I believe the experience of painting is similar in nature.
Question: You first joined Tiffany’S as a design director, what made you want to start writing?
Answer: I’ve known JACKIE ONASSIS a long time now, she’s the editor for the publishing house DOUBLEDAY,and I’m chief editor of the New York branch of ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST. She was on good terms with CEO WALTER HOVING. Writing a series of books on the brand’s history was her idea, and she also energetically facilitated the whole thing. JACKIE thought Tiffany’S played a major role in promoting America’s culture, and using words to let everyone know that America’s very style is embodied in Tiffany’S, just as a different art category, was a good idea. It was in this way I was able to cooperate with one of American history’s First Ladies for 15 years. I’m the author, she’s the editor.
Question: So you must be familiar with Tiffany’S history inside and out?
Answer: To me, writing a book is like completing a jigsaw puzzle, every book’s subject is like a piece of the puzzle. The more pieces you accumulate, the more you're able to see the picture’s landscape. So the target of the Tiffany series of books is not only staff and personnel, but also the general public. On the first day I started work, we had seven outlets with around 900 employees. About 20 years later, that number had increased to 200 outlets and 9000 employees on the globe. Only by taking the historical concepts of the brand, business philosophy, and development direction, and compiling them into books, can every person really start to understand, regardless if they read it now or save it for another day. I think books are not only created for the brand’s employees, but to also help us understand America’s silver and jewelry design style. I often mock myself and think,if Tiffany was a university, I would definitely be No.1 professor; if it was a cultural temple, I'd definitely be the high priest.
| | Chinese to English: Flier / Advertisement (Callout for support) - Advertising / Public Relations | Source text - Chinese
| Translation - English Didn’t graduate this semester? Your 6000字thesis had to be finished by the end of May. If you are like most graduates this semester, you probably didn’t have enough time to write an in-depth thesis and/or prepare for the thesis defense (because the OEC did not give out thesis requirements in a mannerly time). So you may not have passed. If this is the case, don’t wait a whole year (until Fall 2008), you can still graduate next semester.
Want to graduate early? You do not HAVE to be here 4 years to graduate. Some people are surprised they can graduate a year early. If you have some job experience in China and have enough credits, then you probably already qualify to graduate. So there’s a chance you could graduate next semester.
Don’t want to rush your thesis? Some students planned writing their thesis during summer vacation, then return, and graduate next semester, thus having time to write a complete and thorough thesis. Those writing thesis’s needn’t attend classes, but what if they WANTED to attend classes, learn, study, AND graduate? Many find it too stressful or not fair. Sacrifice studying to write a thesis or sacrifice graduating to study and go to class. | | English to Chinese: Thesis - History | Source text - English Everyone knows Christopher Columbus discovered America. It’s what we, as Americans, are all taught in grade school. As history dictates, he was an Italian explorer who sailed the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, whose mission was to find a route to India to increase trade traffic. On October 12, 1492 he and his crew spotted and landed on what we now know as America. When he first set foot on American soil, he was greeted by local natives, and thus Columbus, assuming he was in India at the time, gave them the name “Indians.” However, there are stories, some theoretical and some factual, of dozens of others that could have arrived before Christopher Columbus, like a European Viking by the name of Leif Ericsson who first landed on the shores of America around the year 1000 AD. It’s now commonly accepted among historians and scholars that Christopher Columbus was not the very first non-native to reach America. Why is this not re-taught in history books? Simply because we don’t know who did. There is proof, lots and lots of it, that Columbus was certainly NOT the first, but it’s getting this proof dated and linked to what country and civilization that seems to be the current problem. |
