Storia
Con molta probabilità, furono i Celti a coltivare per primi la vite nel territorio dove attualmente si trova l’Austria. La coltivazione di questa pianta e la produzione del vino fu continuata dai Romani che, al tempo di Augusto, tra la fine del I secolo a.C. e l’inizio del I secolo d.C., estesero il loro dominio su questi territori. Con la caduta dell’Impero Romano di Occidente (476 d.C.), ondate successive di popolazioni germaniche attraversarono questi territori, seminando la distruzione anche nei vigneti.
Alcuni secoli più tardi, nel 796, Carlo Magno fondò in territorio austriaco la Marca Orientale Carolingia, la Östmark, baluardo estremo del Sacro Romano Impero verso Oriente. Con il suo avvento riprese anche lo sviluppo della viticoltura, poiché il vino era un elemento essenziale per la celebrazione della liturgia cristiana della messa. Molte delle attuali e migliori aree vitivinicole austriache risalgono appunto a quei tempi e il loro prestigio è giunto fino a noi grazie anche alla preziosa opera dei monaci, in particolare nei monasteri vicino a Krems, a ovest di Vienna, e in quelli di Göttweig, Güssing, Heiligenkreuz, Klosterneuburg, Melk e Zwettl, fondati dai Cistercensi provenienti dalla Borgogna.
Durante il Medio Evo, la superficie destinata alla coltura della vite era almeno dieci volte superiore a quella attuale e i vini austriaci erano molto famosi ed esportati in molte nazioni europee.
La produzione crebbe ancora nei secoli successivi e si registrarono vere e proprie sovrapproduzioni, che richiesero l’adozione di speciali misure per la regolamentazione della produzione vinicola.
Con la costituzione dell’Impero Asburgico e l’annessione dell’Ungheria da parte di Massimiliano I d‘Asburgo (1493-1519), in Austria iniziò il consumo di vino di Tokaj e, quindi, vennero dismesse numerose vigne locali.
Durante le guerre napoleoniche, i vigneti austriaci subirono ingenti danni; tuttavia, la viticoltura riprese il suo sviluppo grazie anche alla fervida sperimentazione botanica che portò all’affermazione dell’attuale ricco paniere di cui si compone il “Vigneto Austria”. In particolare, è significativa la data del 1860, quando a Klosterneuburg furono fondati la prima scuola di viticoltura ed enologia e un centro di sperimentazione e di ricerca botanica i cui riflessi si avvertirono anche in Italia, in particolare nel Collio goriziano, allora territorio austriaco, che seguì nell’impianto dei nuovi vigneti le indicazioni che venivano dalla scuola sperimentale asburgica. Da allora, i vini austriaci hanno ripreso quota, salvo una battuta d’arresto nel 1985, quando l’industria enologica austriaca fu oggetto di un grave scandalo. Attraverso accurate analisi effettuate su campioni prelevati in molte zone del Paese, si scoprì che gran parte del vino prodotto era addizionato con una sostanza innocua ma assolutamente proibita, il glicol-dietilenico, per accentuarne la morbidezza, la struttura e la dolcezza.
Da questo grave scandalo la viticoltura austriaca uscì però rafforzata, in quanto furono promulgate leggi rigorose e furono prescritti precisi e continui controlli chimici e qualitativi.
L’Austria è attualmente il diciottesimo produttore del mondo in termini di quantità, con circa 2.300.000 ettolitri di vino – dei quali il 90% sono V.Q.P.R.D. – ottenuti da poco più di 50.000 ettari di vigneto, e il consumo annuo pro capite del Paese è di circa 34 litri, di cui circa due terzi di produzione locale, mentre il restante è di importazione. Il consumo del vino in questo Paese è considerevolmente in aumento e i gusti stanno cambiando: il vino non è più considerato un prodotto da consumarsi solo fra persone mature, ma anche tra i giovani. Notevole impulso alla produzione e al consumo del vino è stato dato dai mass media, così come dalla realizzazione di zone turistiche specializzate come le “ciclovie del vino”.
Le caratteristiche pedoclimatiche
Il clima austriaco è tipicamente continentale, con temperature che variano da -1 °C a gennaio fino a 20 °C circa a luglio. Le precipitazioni annue si aggirano sui 550/750 millimetri. La zona del Burgenland, situata in prossimità dell’Ungheria, è maggiormente vocata ai vini dolci botritizzati, poiché il clima è mitigato dalla presenza del lago di Neusiedl.
Il suolo è costituito prevalentemente da argilla in prossimità del lago di Neusiedl, mentre è vulcanico in Stiria; nelle restanti zone, si presenta calcareo e ghiaioso.
Le zone di produzione o Länder e i vitigni
In Austria, si coltivano principalmente uve a bacca bianca; tra queste, il Grüner Veltliner è il più degno e interessante rappresentante. Questa uva, che è anche la più coltivata nel Paese, è capace di produrre vini bianchi unici e straordinari, con qualità organolettiche sorprendenti. Le altre uve a bacca bianca, utilizzate per la produzione sia di vini secchi sia di vini dolci, sono il Furmint, lo Chardonnay, più conosciuto nella Stiria con il nome di Morillon, il Muskateller (Moscato Bianco), il Neuburger, il Pinot Bianco, qui chiamato Weissburgunder, il Pinot Grigio, il Riesling, il Sämling, il Sauvignon Blanc, il Traminer e il Welschriesling (Riesling Italico). Fra le uve a bacca rossa, si coltivano il Pinot Nero o Blauburgunder, il Blaufränkisch, il Cabernet Sauvignon, il Saint Laurent e lo Zweigelt.
La produzione vinicola dell’Austria riguarda principalmente vino bianco, che rappresenta circa l’80% della produzione totale, mentre la maggior parte dei vini rossi è prodotta con l’uva Blaufränkisch.
Da notare che la maggior parte dei vini austriaci è monovarietale: si tratta cioè di vini ottenuti con un’unica varietà di uva. Qui, come in Germania, i vini bianchi raramente sono fatti fermentare in botte, perchè si preferisce esaltare i caratteri aromatici e gustativi delle uve. Anche la tradizione svolge un ruolo fondamentale, soprattutto nella produzione dei vini dolci, che sono ancora prodotti con tecniche messe a punto centinaia di anni fa.
Bassa Austria
Situata a nord-est di Vienna ai confini con la Repubblica Ceca e la Slovacchia, conta circa 30.000 ettari vitati, in cui si coltivano per lo più vitigni autoctoni.
La Bassa Austria rappresenta la zona viticola più importate ed estesa del Paese; vi si trova più del 50% dei vigneti. Nonostante il nome faccia pensare che si trovi a sud, l’area si trova nella parte settentrionale dell’Austria, ai confini con la Repubblica Ceca e la Slovacchia, e si estende lungo il Danubio fino alla parte orientale del Paese. Vienna, la suggestiva capitale austriaca, nonostante sia geograficamente inclusa in questa regione costituisce in realtà un’area viticola autonoma.
La Bassa Austria comprende cinque distretti vinicoli: Donauland-Carnuntum, Kamptal-Donauland, Thermenregion, Wachau e Weinviertel. Di questi cinque distretti, tre sono considerati più importanti, Wachau, Donauland-Carnuntum e Kamptal-Donauland.
Wachau, il più piccolo dei cinque distretti, è in realtà il più rilevante. I vini prodotti in questa piccola zona possiedono una qualità, un’eleganza e un equilibrio che difficilmente si trovano in quelli degli altri distretti. Da notare che nell’area di Wachau, a differenza di quello che è previsto per le altre zone, i vini sono classificati secondo un sistema stabilito dalla locale associazione di produttori (Vinea Wachau) che prevede tre categorie: Steinfeder, Federspiel e Smaragd.
Le uve più coltivate in questa regione sono il Grüner Veltliner e il Riesling. In particolare il primo, un’uva autoctona austriaca, è capace di produrre vini eleganti e piacevoli che lasciano quasi sempre un sorprendente gusto finale di pepe bianco. Altre uve coltivate nella Bassa Austria includono il Riesling, i cui migliori esemplari sono certamente ottenuti nel Wachau. In questa regione si producono anche interessanti vini rossi, principalmente con uve Blauburgunder (Pinot Nero) e Zweigelt.
Burgenland
Situata al confine con l’Ungheria, l’area vitata del Burgenland comprende 16.000 ettari vitati in cui si coltivano prevalentemente vitigni autoctoni, tra cui il Blaufränkisch, il Grüner Veltliner, il Riesling, il Saint Laurent, il Welschriesling, lo Zweigelt, il Rotgipfler e lo Zierfandler.
Il Burgenland è la seconda regione viticola del paese in termini di superficie ed è qui che si producono i famosi ed eccellenti vini dolci dell’Austria, di cui l’Ausbruch rimane fra i più celebrati e rinomati. Questo particolare tipo di vino è prodotto con uve attaccate dalla muffa nobile (Botrytis cinerea) alle quali viene aggiunto mosto fresco e parzialmente botritizzato, seguendo, in questo aspetto, la tecnica di produzione ungherese del Tokaji Aszú. I migliori Ausbruch, così come i migliori Beerenauslese e Trockenbeerenauslese, sono prodotti nella parte settentrionale della regione, nella zona del lago Neusiedl, che gli austriaci chiamano Neusiedlersee, e in particolare nell’area di Rust. Le condizioni climatiche della zona, grazie all’influsso del lago, consentono lo sviluppo della muffa nobile sulle uve, una condizione essenziale per la produzione degli Ausbruch.
Le uve principalmente utilizzate per la produzione di questi vini includono Welschriesling, Weissburgunder, Neuberger, Chardonnay, Traminer e Furmint, l’uva utilizzata per la produzione del Tokaji Aszú. In questa regione si producono famosi Eiswein, o vini del ghiaccio che, pur avendo caratteristiche simili ai vini passiti, si differenziano da questi perchè le uve non sono attaccate dalla muffa nobile, ma vengono raccolte durante i mesi invernali dopo le nevicate e le gelate. La regione produce inoltre vini rossi, in particolare da uve Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt e Saint Laurent, un incrocio fra Blaufränkisch e Zweigelt. Infine, va ricordato che nel Burgenland si producono anche vini bianchi secchi, in particolare da uve Chardonnay.
Stiria
La Stiria (Steiermark) è situata nella zona più meridionale del Paese. Qui i vigneti occupano circa 3.500 ettari e i vitigni autoctoni prevalentemente coltivati sono Blaufränkisch, Welschriesling e Zweigelt.
La regione, come detto, si trova al sud del Paese e la sua produzione vinicola è orientata principalmente verso i vini bianchi. L’uva più coltivata è il Morillon, nome con cui localmente viene chiamato lo Chardonnay. Tuttavia, è il Sauvignon Blanc l’uva che probabilmente produce i migliori vini della Stiria, che, con il loro aroma erbaceo e fresco, spesso ricordano i vini di Sancerre. Altre uve coltivate nella regione sono Weissburgunder, Welschriesling, Traminer e Muskateller.
La Stiria è anche famosa per i vini rosati, in particolare lo Schilcher, prodotto con uve Blauer Wildbacher coltivate quasi esclusivamente nella parte occidentale della regione.
Vienna e la Thermenregion
Vienna è l’unica denominazione vitivinicola al mondo – insieme alla spagnola Vinos de Madrid – che assume il nome della capitale della nazione ed è anche la sola capitale al mondo ad avere un destino comune con il vino, poiché oggigiorno annovera ben 700 ettari di vigneti. Attraversati dalle linee del tram e contornati dai quartieri residenziali, si estendono principalmente sulle colline che costeggiano il sud-ovest della città. I vitigni autoctoni più coltivati nella zona sono il Riesling e lo Zweigelt, con cui si producono ottimi vini bianchi, compreso il Gemischter Satz, un vino tradizionale prodotto con diverse varietà di uve pressate e vinificate insieme. La produzione principale riguarda i vini bianchi, in particolare da uve Riesling, Weissburgunder, Gewürztraminer e Chardonnay. In questa regione si producono anche vini rossi, in particolare da uve Zweigelt e Cabernet Sauvignon, oltre a un’interessante produzione di vini spumanti elaborati con il metodo classico.

La legislazione
La legislazione vitivinicola austriaca è regolata da un sistema di leggi che sono considerate le più severe e restrittive di tutta Europa. La legislazione indica esattamente il tenore zuccherino minimo che deve presentare l’uva al momento della vendemmia e la gradazione alcolica massima. Nei disciplinari – analogamente a quanto previsto negli altri Paesi produttori dell’U.E. – sono inoltre individuate le tipologie di uve, la resa massima per ettaro, la possibilità o meno di zuccheraggio, la tecnica di fermentazione e viene anche specificato quali informazioni debbono essere inserite in etichetta. Se è indicato il nome del vigneto (ried) o una zona geografica particolare da cui proviene l’uva, il vino dovrà essere prodotto esclusivamente con uve provenienti da quel vigneto. Nel caso, invece, in etichetta sia indicato il tipo di uva o l’annata specifica, il vino deve essere prodotto con almeno l’85% dell’uva o dell’annata indicata.
I vini austriaci sono classificati in specifiche categorie, che ne definiscono la qualità e la tipologia. Ogni anno sono effettuate sui vini delle analisi di laboratorio per verificare se soddisfano i requisiti minimi per entrare in una determinata categoria.
Le categorie previste sono:
* Tafelwein (Vino da Tavola): rappresenta la categoria di vino più comune in Austria. Essa non prevede requisiti particolari, non sono previsti limiti massimi di resa dei vigneti, nessuna indicazione di origine e i vini possono essere anche arricchiti.
* Landwein: posta un livello sopra i vini da tavola, questa categoria può essere comparata, per certi aspetti, ai Vin de Pays francesi. I vini appartenenti a questa categoria possono essere arricchiti.
* Qualitätswein: categoria a cui appartengono tutti i vini di qualità
* Kabinett: vini di qualità (Qualitätswein) con un volume massimo di alcol di 12,9°. Non possono essere arricchiti.
* Prädikatswein: rappresenta il livello più alto del sistema di qualità per i vini austriaci, ed è praticamente riservata ai soli vini dolci e liquorosi. I vini di questa categoria non possono essere arricchiti e devono provenire da un’area legalmente riconosciuta, devono riportare nell’etichetta l’anno della vendemmia e la densità del mosto deve essere ufficialmente certificata.
I vini appartenenti alla categoria Prädikatswein comprendono le seguenti categorie, dal livello più basso di densità del mosto al più alto:
* Spätlese: vino prodotto con uve giunte a completa maturazione.
* Auslese: vino prodotto con uve selezionate e raccolte a mano. I grappoli non maturi o danneggiati non devono essere utilizzati per la produzione di questi vini.
* Beerenauslese: vini prodotti con acini di uva molto maturi e selezionati a mano. Le uve possono anche essere attaccate dalla muffa nobile, Botrytis cinerea.
* Eiswein: vini prodotti con uve congelate e generalmente raccolte di notte. Il congelamento dell’uva deve avvenire naturalmente sulla vite per effetto della bassa temperatura.
* Ausbruch: particolare vino prodotto a Rust nell’area di Neusiedlersee-Hügelland, ottenuto con uve surmature, che abbiano subito un appassimento naturale e siano attaccate dalla muffa nobile
* Trockenbeerenauslese: vini prodotti con acini di uva molto maturi e appassiti selezionati a mano. Questi sono i vini più rari e costosi ottenuti in Austria e vengono prodotti solamente in annate particolarmente favorevoli. Le uve devono appassire naturalmente sulla vite per effetto della muffa nobile
La zona di Wachau, fra le più importanti aree vinicole di tutta l’Austria, prevede una propria classificazione dei vini:
* Steinfeder: vini naturali che non hanno subito pratiche di zuccheraggio, con un grado alcolico non superiore a 10,7°.
* Federspiel: vini naturali che non hanno subito pratiche di zuccheraggio, con un grado alcolico non superiore a 12°.
* Smaragd: vini prodotti con uve molto mature, in genere vendemmie tardive, con un grado alcolico minimo di 11,3°. I vini smaragd hanno in genere contenuti alcolici superiori al limite minimo consentito e sono da considerarsi migliori per la loro rotondità e struttura e per le caratteristiche organolettiche.

Austria
History
Celts are likely to have been the first to cultivate the vine in what is now Austria. The Romans went on to continue growing this plant and producing wine when, between the end of the first century B.C. and the beginning of the first century A.C., at the time of Augustus, they extended their domination over these territories. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476 A.C.), waves of German populations crossed these territories, wreaking destruction on the vineyards.
A few centuries later, in 796, Charles the Great founded the Eastern Carolingian March in the territory of Östmark, the extreme eastern bulwark of the Holy Roman Empire. This saw the resumption of wine-growing since wine was an essential element for the celebration of the Christian Mass. Many of the present and best Austrian wine-growing areas go back to those times and their prestige has survived intact to our times thanks largely to the excellent work the monks, especially in the monasteries near Krems, west of Vienna, and in those of Göttweig, Güssing, Heiligenkreuz, Klosterneuburg, Melk, and Zwettl which were founded by the Cistercian monks from Burgundy.
In the middle ages the area under the cultivation of the vine was at least ten times greater than it is now and Austrian wines were very well-known and exported to many European countries.
Production grew steadily over the following centuries and real overproduction took place. As a consequence special measures were introduced to control the production of wine.
With the establishment of the Habsburg Empire and the annexation of Hungary by Maximilian I of Habsburg (1493-1519), Tokay wine began to become popular in Austria and many local vineyards were thus discontinued.
During the Napoleonic wars, Austrian vineyards suffered considerable damage but wine growing resumed thanks to the fervent botanical experimentation that led to the success of the present rich variety of vine that make up the Austrian vineyards. The year 1860 is a significant as it saw the foundation in Klosterneuburg of the first winegrowing and oenology school and of a botanical experimentation and research centre whose influence spread s far as Italy, especially in the Gorizian Collio, then through the Austrian territory. As a result, new vineyards were planted according to the indication provided by the Habsbug experimental school. Austrian wines have continued to regain popularity ever since. In 1985, however, the Austrian wine industry was scarred by a serious scandal. Careful analyses carried out on samples collected in various areas of the country revealed that much of the wine produced had an addition of ethylene glycol. This substance is innocuous but absolutely prohibited, and was used to intensify softness, structure, and fragrance. Despite this scandal the Austrian wine industry emerged even stronger as strict law were made and precise and continuous chemical and qualitative controls were prescribed.
Austria is currently the eighteenth wine producer in the world in terms of quantity, with around 2,300,000 hectolitres of wine being produced, 90% of which are V.Q.P.R.D., obtained from a little over 50,000 hectares of vineyards. Annual consumption per head amounts to around 34 litres, two thirds of which are local production, whereas the rest is imported. Wine consumption in this country is steadily increasing and tastes are also changing as fact ceases to be perceived as something for older people but also as a young person’s drink. Considerable impulse has been given to wine production and consumption by the media, as well as by the development of tourist trails known as the "wine cycleways".
Pedoclimatic characteristics
The Austrian climate is typically continental with temperatures ranging from -1 °C in January to around 20 °C in July. Yearly rainfall amounts to around 550/750 millimetres. The Burgenland area, located near Hungary, is mainly suitable for sweet botrytised wines because of the milder climate due to the influence of lake Neusiedl.
The ground mainly consists of clay near this lake, while it is volcanic in Styria and in the other areas it is mainly calcareous and gravely.
Production areas or Länder and the vineyards
The main varieties of grapes cultivated in Austria are white, including Grüner Veltliner, which is particularly worthy of mention. This grape variety, the most widely grown in the country, can produce unique and extraordinary white wines, with surprising organoleptic qualities. Other white grapes used for both dry and sweet wines, are Furmint and Chardonnay, better known in Styria as Morillon, Muskateller (White Muscat), Neuburger, Pinot Blanc, here called Weissburgunder, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sämling, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer and Welschriesling (Italic Riesling). Among the red varieties we find Pinot Noir or Blauburgunder, Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Saint Laurent and Zweigelt.
Austrian wine production is mainly of white wine, representing around 80% of total production, while most of the red wines are produced with the Blaufränkisch grape.
Most Austian wines are purestand, i.e., wines are obtained from a single variety of grapes. Here, as in Germany, white wines are rarely fermented in barrels, as it is preferred to bring out aromas and flavours of the grapes. Tradition also plays a fundamental, mainly in the production of sweet wines that are still produced with techniques established hundreds of years ago.
Lower Austria
Located north-east of Vienna at the borders with the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with 30,000 hectares this area is planted with mainly local varieties.
Lower Austria is the most important and largest wine-growing area in the country, with more than 50% of the vineyards. Despite the name, the area is located in the northern part of Austria, at the borders with the Czech Republic and Slovakia and extends along the Danube as far as the eastern part of the country. Vienna, the picturesque Austrian capital, although geographically included in that region, is actually classified as an autonomous wine-growing area.
Lower Austria includes five wine-growing areas, namely Donauland-Carnuntum, Kamptal-Donauland, Thermenregion, Wachau, and Weinviertel. Among these areas, three are considered the most important, that is Wachau, Donauland-Carnuntum, and Kamptal-Donauland.
Wachau, the smallest of the five areas, is actually the most remarkable. Wines produced in this small area have a quality, elegance, and balance difficult to find in the wines of the other areas. It should be noted that in the Wachau area, unlike in other areas, wines are classified according to a system established by the local producers' association (Vinea Wachau) that provides for three categories: Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd.
The most cultivated grapes in this region are the Grüner Veltliner and the Riesling. The first in particular, a local Austrian grape, can produce elegant and pleasant wines that leaves an aftertaste of white pepper. Other grapes cultivated in the Lower Austria include Riesling, the best examples certainly those obtained in the Wachau area. In this region there are also interesting red wines mainly made with with Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Zweigelt grapes.
Burgenland
Located at the border with Hungary, the Burgenland areas includes 16,000 hectares planted with mainly local vines, such as Blaufränkisch, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Saint Laurent, Welschriesling, Zweigelt, Rotgipfler, and Zierfandler.
Burgenland is the second wine region of the country in terms of area and it is here the well-known and excellent sweet Austrian wines are produced, among which the Ausbruch remains the most celebrated and acclaimed. This particular wine is produced with grapes attacked by mould (Botrytis cinerea) to which is added fresh and partially botrytised must, according to, in this respect, the Tokaji Aszú Hungarian production technique. The best Ausbruch, like the best Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, is produced in the northern part of the region, in the area of lake Neusiedl, which the Austrians call Neusiedlersee, and in particular in the Rust area. The climate of the area, thanks to the influence of the lake, allows for the development of botrytis on the grapes, essential pre-requisite for the making of Ausbruch.
The grapes most used for the production of these wines include Welschriesling, Weissburgunder, Neuberger, Chardonnay, Traminer, and Furmint, the grape used for the production of the Tokaji Aszú. The well-known Eiswein, or ice wines, are produced in this region. Even though these wines have characteristics similar to those of the raisin wines, they are different in that the grapes have not been attacked by the botrytis, but are collected during the winter months after snowfalls and frosts. The region also produces red wines, in particular from Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, and Saint Laurent grapes, a cross between Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt. Finally, it is worth recalling that the Burgenland region also produces white dry wines, in particular from Chardonnay grapes.
Styria
Styria (Steiermark) is located in the southernmost area of the country. Here vineyards occupy around 3,500 hectares and the most commonly grown local varieties are Blaufränkisch, Welschriesling and Zweigelt.
The region, as stated previously, is located in the southern part of the country and its wine production focuses mainly on white wines. The most cultivated grape is the Morillon, a name locally used to refer to Chardonnay. However, the Sauvignon Blanc is the grape that probably produces the best Styrian wines, which are often reminiscent of Sancerre wines by virtue of their herbaceous and fresh fragrance. Other grapes cultivated in the area are Weissburgunder, Welschriesling, Traminer, and Muskateller.
Styria is also well-known for rosé wines, in particular Schilcher, produced with Blauer Wildbacher grapes cultivated almost exclusively in the western part of the region.
Vienna and the Thermenregion
Vienna is the only wine designation in the world, together with the Spanish Vinos de Madrid, that bears the name of the nation's capital, and it is also the only capital in the world with 700 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are crossed by tramlines and surrounded by residential areas and mainly extend on the hills skirting the south-west part of the town. The most grown local vines are Riesling and Zweigelt that produce excellent white wines, included the Gemischter Satz, a traditional wine produced with several varieties of grapes pressed together. Most production focuses on white wines, in particular from Riesling, Weissburgunder, Gewürztraminer, and Chardonnay grapes. Red wines are also produced in this region, especially from Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, as well as some interesting sparkling wines processed according to the classic method.

Legislation
Austrian wine legislation involves a system of laws among the strictest and most restrictive in Europe. The legislation indicates exactly the minimum sugar content that the grapes must have at the moment of the harvest and the maximum alcohol content. The specifications, similar to what is provided for in other EU producing countries, also identify the types of grapes, the maximum yield per hectare, sugar enrichment, the fermentation technique and which information must be written on the label. If the name of the vineyard (ried), for example, or a particular geographical area where the grapes are from are indicated, the wine will need to be produced solely with grapes coming from that vineyard. On the other handy, if the label indicates the type of grape or the specific vintage, the wine must be produced with at least 85% of the grapes of the vintage indicated.
Austrian wines are classified in specific categories, which define their quality and typology. Each year laboratory analysis are carried out on wines to check if they meet the minimum requirements to enter a specific category.
The categories provided are:
* Tafelwein (Table Wine): the most common category of wine in Austria. It does not provide particular requirements, nor vineyards' maximum yield limits, nor indication of origin and the wine can also be enriched.
* Landwein: a level above the table wines, this category can be compared, in many respects, to the French Vin de Pays. The wines belonging to this category can be enriched.
* Qualitätswein: all quality wines belong to this category
* Kabinett: quality wines (Qualitätswein) with a maximum alcohol content of 12.9%. They cannot be enriched.
* Prädikatswein: this is the highest level of the Austrian wines quality system and it is restricted to sweet and liqueur-like wines. Wines in this category cannot be enriched and must come from a legally recognised area, the label must bear the vintage year and the must density needs to be officially certified.
Wines belonging to the Prädikatswein category include the following categories, from the lowest must density level to the highest:
* Spätlese: wine produced with grapes that reached complete ripeness.
* Auslese: wine produced with hand-collected selected grapes. Unripe or damaged bunches of grapes cannot be used for the production of these wines.
* Beerenauslese: wines produced with very ripen grapes and manually selected. Grapes can also be attacked by the mould, Botrytis cinerea.
* Eiswein: wines produced with frozen grapes and usually collected at night time. The grapes freezing must take place naturally on the vine due to the low temperature.
* Ausbruch: a particular wine produced in Rust in the Neusiedlersee-Hügelland area, obtained with over-ripe grapes that have undergone natural withering and have been attacked by botrytis
* Trockenbeerenauslese: wines produced with very ripen and withered grapes and manually selected. These are the Austrian most rare and expensive wines and are produced solely in particular favourable years. Grapes must wither naturally on the vine as a consequence of the botrytis
The Wachau area, one of Austria's most important wine-growing areas, has a its own wine classification:
* Steinfeder: natural wines with no sugar enrichment, with alcohol content not higher than 10.7%.
* Federspiel: natural wines with no sugar enrichment, with alcohol content not higher than 12%.
* Smaragd: wines produced with very mature grapes, generally late vintage, with a 11.3% minimum alcohol content. The smaragd wines have generally an alcohol content higher than the minimum permitted limit and can be considered as better because of their roundness and structure and for the organoleptic characteristics.

The axle journal has been bolted onto the mixing screw pipe.
The mixing screw pipe revolves around the axle and also follows the rotation of the orbit arm. The weight and the pulling force of the mixing screw is handled by the orbit arm. As an additional safety, the bearing ring is executed with a temperature sensor, type PT100. Under normal operating circumstances the temperature of the ring bearing unit will be slightly higher than the ambient temperature. Should the axle journal become too warm, then also the temperature of the bearing ring will increase. Refer to appendix Q to this end.
The PT-100 will detect this and by means of this signal, the mixer should be switched off in order to prevent further damage. For the switching off procedure, the temperature has to be set for eacht class, for T4 this will be 108° C and for T3 - 160° C.
