1. What is ProZ.com?

ProZ.com--the community--is a group of language professionals that includes translators, interpreters, translation companies, and their clients. ProZ.com--the site--is a marketplace and workplace: thousands of language pros exchange job and term information here every day. ProZ.com--the staff--is a small group of programmers and language enthusiasts based in Syracuse, New York, assisted by volunteer moderators around the world.

2. How is "ProZ.com" pronounced?

At headquarters in New York, ProZ.com staff refer to the site as "proz-dot-com", with the 'proz' part pronounced exactly like "(written) prose" or "pros" (as in professionals). But some people say "pro-zee-dot-com", "pro-zed", "procetta", etc.

3. I want to use the old site design, the one with the full menu at the left. Can I?

Yes. To go back, just access this link:
http://www.proz.com/topic/42674?toggle_design=v3 (We suggest you bookmark this so that you can jump back and forth between old and new designs.)

But be warned: we do not support the old design anymore. Things that are accessible from the new design are not accessible from the old (everything is accessible from the new.)

Since we are unable to guarantee that we will not do something to make the old design unusable, and since we want all members to have access to all site features, there will be a time that we simply remove the old design from service. In the meantime, I suggest that anyone using the old design simply switch back and forth (using the bookmarked "go-back" link) until they are comfortable with the new design.

4. How many glossaries are there on the site?

There are two general glossaries on the site: a personal glossary and the KudoZ glossary.

(GlossPost is a specialized discussion group for the dissemination of glossary, dictionary and terminology database URLs among translators.)

When a user asks a KudoZ question, and after it has been graded, the user has the option of adding the KudoZ question to the KudoZ glossary and their personal glossary. Once the term is entered in the KudoZ glossary, it can be searched by various KudoZ search functions, i.e. KudoZ search, KudoZ glossaries, and search glossaries under the KudoZ menu bar.

Note: Once the KudoZ term has been entered in your personal glossary, that term has become part of your "personal glossary", not your "KudoZ" glossary.

Personal glossaries may be uploaded and/or entered by you in order to build your term base by clicking on the "edit terms" link on the left side of your profile page. If you would like to delete/rename a glossary, click on the "My Glossary" link under the "My ProZ.com" menu bar.

FYI: Browniz are awarded when you enter terms in your personal glossary and when you format KudoZ terms.

5. What is a ProZ.com "moderator"?

A moderator is a person who, in keeping with the site's mission, helps to steer site development, assist users in getting the most out of participation in the community, enforce adherence to site rules, investigate cases of abuse, and otherwise contribute to the continued maintenance and improvement of the site and community.

The moderator role is described in further detail here.

6. How are moderators selected?

Some candidates volunteer for the position (usually through the support system), some are recommended by current moderators or by other members, and others are selected by staff among site members.

Advice and feedback are asked from other moderators, but the ultimate decision and responsibility falls on site staff.

7. My country is not listed on the site, or is not listed correctly.

The site uses ISO codes for both languages and countries listed. A list of countries and ISO codes for them can be found here.

If your country is listed in ISO but does not appear on the site, or is listed incorrectly according to the ISO codes, please notify staff by submitting a support request.
