Hello
(I hope this is the right forum...)
I know how to count words in a Word document, but I am unable to do that with PowerPoint documents (I had to download a free, 30-day evaluation software to be able to quote a translation).
Could someone please help?

Did you search previous postings already?
You may want to enter e.g. 'word count' in the Search box on this page.

So obvious, and yet...
For my defence, I'll only say I wish they'd applied to PP the same thing as in Word, ie Tools, then Word Count.

There are two other options:
(1) If you have Trados, you can export the text with T-Window for PowerPoint
(2) If you can convert your PPT into a PDF, then you can copy the text into Word and count the lines there (also useful for spell-checking).

Thanks. Why make it obvious if it can be hidden in some obscure menu and impossible to find in PowerPoint help?

I don't know why, but SOMEtimes it doesn't seem to work properly.
It is also useful, as it gives a count of 'editing time', so you can tell how long you've spent on a given doc.; again, though, for some unknown reason, this SOMEtimes doesn't appear to work.
Also, be wary of Word wordcounts; I had an embarrassing instance of this the other day, where counting the same text in 2 different formats yielded wordcounts adrift by 50%!!!

I see this thread is pretty old, but it comes up first on Google if you do a search for "powerpoint word count". I figured I'd help out by letting folks know how to get to the same info if they're using one of them newfangled computers (with Office 2007).
Click on the stupid OFFICE BUTTON
Scroll down to PREPARE until the "prepare" menu pops up on the right.
Click on PROPERTIES
This pops up a context menu with a bunch of fields. You don't care about any of them. ... I've become a great fan of Wercat, and using it to extract PPT text to Word enables you to then perform all the usual manipulations like word / character counts etc.
Do be wary, though, of the amount of text that can sometimes be 'hidden' within graphic elements in PPT; I nearly came adrift by about 25% the other day, because of some graphic-embedded text that even Werecat wasn't able to extract.

Unfortunately, the word-counting algorithm in PowerPoint 2007 is still broken, counting punctuation as words.
For this sentence:
I am a cat.
It gives the word count: 5
For the following two lines (in separate text boxes)
I am a cat.
(really!)
It gives the word count: 8
Which is probably good for you if you bill by the output word, but so great if you want to get consistent word counts between PowerPoint and Word.

Thanks Frank for the Office 2007 wordcount roadmap. It seems Office 2007 is the most unintuitive so-called "update" I've ever come across! And you have to pay to have it displayed in 2003 format. All the better for OpenOffice.
As for the PPT wordcounts, I've just done one that literally gives me HALF the total I get by copy-pasting to Word. Rather infuriating as I've just explained how to find the wordcount in PPT to my client!
