Hello,

When localizing a web site into Arabic, what should I charge for? Is it translation only or translation plus formatting (since everything will be moved Right to Left) and graphics translation?

Thanks..

Hourly Rate for Production Jun 10, 2004

Greetings... ahalan wa sahalan bikum jamii3aan...

Perhaps the better method would be to charge for your work, based on an hourly rate. Since much of that work involved in localisation / Arabisation of a website (are you using MS FrontPage XP?) is similar to reformatting and DTP-like manipulation, that aspect of the project would usually occupy more time and attentive thought than would the translation phase.

"Activity-based costing" is a useful method, adapted from the discipline of systems engineering, for developing both your quote (flat project fee) and your schdule for production and delivery of such projects.

[ The notion of a "per word" basis for a quote -- while mentally convenient -- is fallacious and akin to a carpenter's charging for design and construction of a house on the basis of the number of boards, nails and plumbing used. ]

Hope this helps.

Khair, in sha' Allah.

All that of effort Jun 10, 2004

Hi Sameh,
I think you could charge the job as a translation puting into consideration the other tasks. Which means that if you to charge a text only of that kind (as if the client sent you the extracted text only) a X USD, you can charge a text translation+formating+graphics tarnslation a 2X USD. And the matter is up to your estiamtion at the end.

I hope it helps
Sabry
