Good Morning,

I would like to ask you something.
Could you tell me if Omar Kahaijam has written other poems besides the Rubaijates?
I searched for the information everywhere I could and they don't give any other information. They only talk about the Rubaijates. Still I know a poem which is said to be of Khaijam too. It is not part of the Rubaijates (I read them). The poem is called in translation "The Jug".

I also have met quotes in several books containing verses of this poet, beautiful, but did not find them in the Rubaijates either.
Could you give me more information?
Thank you very much.

P.S I liked very much the translation in French of his verses.

Hello Ruxi,

Yes, Omar Khaijam has written other poems and verses hear and there, I know many of them, but they are all in Arabic. According to what I know, he wrote these originally in Arabic, that's why they can be found in old Arabic literature. I wish I can find these online for you, but unfortunately they are not available online. There are some verses written by him that can be found on a the following website http://www.alwaraq.com/, but it is all in Arabic. You can also look his name up with this spelling (Omar Khayyam). You might find something, although all I've found in English until now are the Rubaiyyat.
I will let you know if I find anything else.

Regards

Omar Khayyam was a Persian astronomer, and he wrote the Rubaiyat in Farsi, not Arabic.

One of Iran's great poets Nov 18, 2004

Marc is quite right: the Rubaiyat was written in Persian (Farsi) and not Arabic. Khayyam is one of Iran's great poets. A "rubiyat" is a quatrain (a poem or stanza of four lines) as you may have noticed from what you've read. The collections available in other languages are just that - collections, and it is estimated that Khayyam wrote anything between 200 to 600 of these glorious, little gems of poetry.

The most famous translation is that of Edward Fitzgerald back in the 1850s and Khayyam's fame in the western world is largely due to this translation.
Omar Khayyam was, as Marc also correctly pointed out, a famous mathematician, astronomer and philosopher. He certainly got around!

I doubt that he wrote any other poetry outside of his "rubaiyats", but then again, not all have been translated into English/other foreign languages.

Persian poetry is amazing; perhaps you could try finding translations of other great Iranian poets, such as Hafez, Rumi (recent discussion about him in the literature forum), Ferdousi and many others. Perhaps if you re-post your query in the literature forum, you may also get a greater response.

I would also suggest (particularly if you read French) Amine Maalouf's fictional intrigue novel, "Samarcande".

Happy reading!
Aisha

Thank you all for the answers Nov 18, 2004

Thank you all for your kind answers.
I asked this question in the Arabic Forum, as it is no Persian forum.
I know Khayyam was a Persian and I know about his works.
I thought you may know more than what they are writing everywhere, but yes, you are right. It may not be translated yet.
I have seen the most important translations, but each have translated only a number of rubaijates.
Thank you for your recommendations for other Persian poets. I will look for them.

I am interested in beautiful literature, whereever it comes from.
Interesting enough I am not yet familiar with the most recent writers and poets, the contemporary literature.

Have a nice day,
Ruxi
