I'm just starting out as a freelance translator translating from French to English, and was wondering what is the going rate/word to quote an agency?

Don't go for agencies going for the lowest rates Nov 18, 2003

Serious agencies state the price they offer.

Think about it. Who'll work for 0.05€/$? That's what you're up against. Don't bother if you have any self-respect.

Best of luck!

Rates surveys Nov 18, 2003

Obtain a copy of a rates survey from one of the professional associations, for instance from ITI at

Agency rates vary from near-zero to 0.15 USD and more per word, depending on a host of factors (location, subject, quality of agencies own customers, etc.).

A useful exercise is to decide what your minimum gross income has to be in order to survive and divide it by the number of words you can reasonably translate in, say, 240 working days. Do the same with the gross income you reckon you need in order to live comfortably.

David
