A few weeks ago Antoinette Sixt Ruth provided some information in this forum on the NYU translation certificate program. Just before taking off on a skiing trip she sent me this additional information to share here.

Dear student:
Thank you for your inquiry and your interest in our Translation Certificate Program.
We are pleased to provide you with the information below and hope this answers your questions.

The Certificate in Translation may be taken in one of six language pairs or in general translation:

 French to English Translation
 German to English Translation
 Spanish to English Translation
 English to Portuguese Translation
 English to Spanish Translation
 Arabic to English Translation
 General Translation

For the first six language pairs, you must complete a total of six courses: five core courses and one elective (i.e. Literary, Diplomacy and International Affairs, Translation into the source language; this may be a sixth core course if you so choose). For the General Translation Certificate you must take four courses in one language pair and two courses in a second language pair; all six of these courses must be core courses.

Core courses include Commercial, Legal, Medical, and Technical Translation courses. Please note that the German to English, English to Portuguese and Arabic to English programs are offered only on line.

All other programs are offered both on-line and on-site. On-line and on-site programs follow the same format. At the time of this writing, fees run $740.00 per course.

Before you are admitted to the Certificate Program, you must take and pass an entrance exam (for the General Certificate, you must pass the entrance exam for each language pair). The exam is free of charge. This consists of a general passage of approximately 300 words to be translated into the target language and a short essay to be written in the target language; the exam is timed and must be completed within 1 ½ hours. Exams are offered three times a year, 3-4 weeks before the beginning of classes (Fall, Spring, and Summer terms).

Exams for the Summer 2004 session may be taken on the NYU campus on Thursday April 22 from 6.30 – 8:30 p.m. and Saturday April 24 from 10.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. Please call 212-998-7030 starting April 1 to sign up for the exam.

For those unable to attend these exams you may take the exam by e-mail. Please note that the e-mail tests are timed exams, like the on-site tests. You have to send an email message to [email protected] in order to sign up for an email test. You will sign up for one these tests by filling out the form sent to you and returning it to us. The day before the exam, you will receive instructions about how to open the test, save it with the appropriate name and return it to me. When you take your exam, you will receive an email with a Word attachment (Word 2000) at the time and date you have chosen. The instructions for the test will be included in the body of the e-mail message. The test itself will be in the attachment. You will have to follow instructions on how to save, name and return the exam file to us. If the exam is not saved and returned to us with the proper extension (or file’s name), it will not be accepted.

E-mail exams for Summer 2004 will take place on the following dates:

Friday, April 30 1:00 PM to 2:45 PM EST
Tuesday, May 4 4:00 PM to 5:45 PM EST
Thursday, May 6 12:00 AM to 1:45 PM EST
Saturday, May 8 10:30 PM to 12:15 PM EST
Wednesday, May 12 2:00 AM to 3:45 PM EST
Saturday, May 15 10:30 AM to 12:15 PM EST

REMEMBER THAT YOU MUST SIGN UP FOR THESE EMAIL EXAMS. SIGN UP BEGINNING APRIL 1. A FORM WILL BE SENT OUT TO YOU UPON REQUEST. YOU WILL HAVE TO COMPLETE IT AND RETURN IT TO US. WE WILL THEN COMFIRM THAT YOU HAVE SIGNED UP FOR THE TEST.

REMEMBER: YOU MUST SIGN UP AT LEAST 48 HOURS BEFORE THE EXAM TIME. THE FORM WILL ASK YOU TO PROVIDE US WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

NAME
MAIN E-MAIL
BACK-UP E-MAIL (REQUIRED!!)
PHONE (REQUIRED!!)
LANGUAGE PAIR
EXAM DATE AND TIME

[NOTE: IF YOU DECIDE NOT TO TAKE THE EXAM, YOU MUST NOTIFY US 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE TO ENSURE YOU WILL NOT BE SENT THE EXAM. IF YOU DO NOT NOTIFY US, YOU WILL BE SENT THE EXAM AND, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU OPEN THE ATTACHMENT OR TAKE THE EXAM, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SIGN UP FOR ANOTHER DATE AS THE EXAM IS COMPROMISED THE MOMENT IT IS SENT TO YOU. THIS CANNOT BE CONTESTED!]

After passing the exam, the first course to be taken must be the Introduction to Translation Studies to be passed with a grade of “B” or better, after which more than one course may be taken at the same time. The student must maintain a “B” average throughout the program.

The Certificate in Court Interpreting follows the same six-course format. It is offered in English Spanish only. Students must take a ½ hour telephone interview as the entrance exam (cost is US $10, payable by certified check or postal money order only). IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS EXAM, YOU MUST CALL 212-998-7028 TO SET UP A TIME AND OBTAIN PERTINENT INFORMATION.

Once students pass the entrance exam, they must take Fundamentals of Court Interpreting. Upon passing this course with a grade of B or better, students must complete Simultaneous I, Simultaneous II, Consecutive Interpreting, Court Procedures, and Translation for Interpreters. At the time of this writing, Interpreting courses are priced at $870 each. Please note that Fundamental of Court Interpreting is priced at $1,065.

Examination results are valid for one year only. The program must be completed within four years.

For the summer semester of 2004, courses on site will start for both the Translation and Interpreting programs will start on the week of May 17 through the end of July. Translation courses on line will all start on June 1 and end on August 10.

I hope this information has been helpful to you. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again at [email protected]

NYU's Master's Program is Defunct, though Mar 28, 2004

Thanks for the info. Just wanted to let everyone know that I got a letter in the mail the other day indicating that their M.A. in Translation has been discontinued.

(Though I realize that we're talking about the Certificate Program above, and not the M.A.)

Thanks for the info Mar 28, 2004

I think it's an interesting alternative for those colleagues who, coming from other backgrounds, have have been working as translators for some time now and are looking for a certification in translation studies. Or for those like me, who are thinking about becoming an interpreter as well. By the way, maybe it's a good idea to post the part about Court Interpreting in the newly created Interpreting forum.

Regards,
David

Thanks for the update, Sandra. And yes, David, that's a good idea about posting this info in the new Interpreting forum. Will do.
Kim
