This has come up a few times, but in searching through the forums I couldn't find anything more recent than June 2003, so I'll ask it again.

As a new freelance translator (in MA), do I need to charge sales tax on translation services?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve Battisti

no sales tax on professional services Aug 12, 2004

Hi,

In Massachusetts there is no sales tax on professional services. So you don't need to collect any.

You of course need to pay quarterly estimated income tax.

[insert standard disclaimer on tax and legal advice]

Best wishes,
Bruce

to "add" the tax to your rates. There is no official sales tax for our services, but since you are the one paying your own taxes out of the money you earn, it's your responsibiity to count on that and to make sure you have it at the end of each quarter. It is easy to forget if you maybe have spent years working as an employee and having the tax taken out before the check got to you. Uncle Sam wants his share and wants it ASAP.
A good way is to have a special savings account, aside from the regular business account, and automatically, without thinking about it, put 20-25% of every check/payment into it.
Also remember you have to pay more as a self employed person.
