After having seen more complaining in the forum than positive comments on clients and especially agencies, I realize that translators, just like clients, are in need of education.

I will not try and teach something new to colleagues most of whom have more experience than I, but I really believe that this could be an extremely handy tool in a translator\'s life. It also seems that most of us are not aware of the Translator\'s Bill of Rights and I cannot stress enough to look out for ourselves and each other by promoting this useful document.

Please take a look and see for yourselves how much trouble and time this can save you all.

I also would like to invite my fellow translators to participate in this forum by telling us what they know about translator\'s rights in different countries, who they can turn to for remedy in case of disrespect/abuse and how all this translates internationally (countries outside of some of the mentioned regulations, etc.). I think that if we put our heads together, we can come up with a lot of solutions to put a foot down and be respected. The Bill is truly inspirational and could give us all some large-scale ideas on the improvement of our condition.

Any comments are also welcome.

Please, spread the word!

Thanks for the material (and the reminder)... May 3, 2003

For those of you who may find the above link a bit problematic, the FIT has published a copy at:

Also, not to get your hopes too high: the text is called \"The Nairobi Recommendation\" (the usual caveats...)

Wasn't all that amended in Oslo in 1994? May 4, 2003

My document includes a charter, not only the recommendations in the 70\'s.

I will take a look at yours.

Thanks for the link!

This is the real address for the document I was referring to: May 4, 2003

The document I gave the link to is your document and mine together, with French versions of both included.

In any case, even if these documents are more like projects, it should not hurt us to make it known to all translators and eventually agencies and clients. The more translators help promoting this, the more chances we have of making it a reality.
