This Q was posted in the Spanish section, but as i had intended to ask the same question and so far noone has replied in Spanish, I am taking teh liberty of posting the question in English.

Any information on the subject 8especially in Spain) would be useful, what it is, how it works, why it\'s necessary etc.

thanks in advance.

Dear Ailish,

I think it\'s usually called professional indemnity insurance.

Dear Ailish,

It is an insurance against a client making a claim against you for a lot of money, on the basis of your translations not being of a professional standard and their losing a lot of money as a consequence of having received an unprofessional or incorrect translation.

No insurer will provide you with professional indemnity insurance without first seeing your certificates, diplomas and other translation qualifications. It would not make sense for them to insure you if they had no proof that you were a qualified translator of a professional standard.

It is important for professionals of all kinds to have professional indemnity insurance - lawyers, doctors, etc. always have it (and have to, by law), but translators should have it too, because, even if your work is of a very high standard, you might make one small mistake eventually that could cause somebody to make a claim against you, and it could cost you all your savings if you do not have this insurance.

In order to arrange the insurance, you will need to contact an insurance company in Spain (if this is your country of interest) for further details. The insurance man will tell you exactly how it works, in as much detail as you like.
