You can also buy and additional text ad from proz.com for your translation specialty. For US$ 20 it will be displayed 400 times, each time when a directory search matching your specialty is performed. [Site staff, please correct me, if I am wrong].
It means and extra investment when you're cash-strapped, but it might just as well be worth it.
Regards,
Piotr

Anyway, Steve is just starting out and he's got plenty to think about from this thread!
The main thing is to know precisely what you can and can't do, package the former as attractively as possible and hold out for top dollar. You won't be able to do that if you just wait around for the bottom feeders to post your ideal job at some appallingly low rate.
Giles
The thing that matters is the top dollar, euro, whatever and the way to reach it - involving time, patience, endurance, etc. and a certain form of indifference towards the Backwaters of Scylla.

Last time I looked, Piotr, you can also "pay" with BrowniZ points. Some of us have accumulated a bunch that we wouldn't otherwise use, so this is one way to get rid of them and maybe achieve a useful result. I did this once for chemistry, though I can't say whether it made any difference. I didn't have much capacity at the time, and I did it more out of curiosity and a desire to see how the system worked.

Edited to add:
Yes, it still works with BrowniZ. I just checked.
