Just an idea: let\'s start a new thread here with information regarding VAT rules for each EU country. Replies to this thread should be marked as \"VAT - UK\", \"VAT - Germany\", \"VAT - France\", etc. for easy reference.

Good point! Apr 1, 2002

[Good idea, Werner. Though it is not relevant for me at the moment for being outside Europe, it will be interesting to learn on this and to contribute when appropriate.]

is 17.5% but you only need to register for VAT if you earn over £50,000 a year so because most translators are not in that exalted position they do not charge it all.

The current VAT rate in Croatia is 22%.

You are subject to VAT if you earn over 85,000 Croatian Kuna a year(US$ 10,100 or EUR 11,600).

VAT in Germany is 16%. You have to register wtih your local Finanzamt and get a tax number before you can charge VAT. Depending on how much you earn, you can offset the VAT you pay on your expenses againgst the VAT you charge either monthly (if you earn a whole bunch ), quarterly or annually.

In Italy you must have a VAT number to work as a freelancer regardless of how much you earn in a year.

VAT is actually 20%.

When working for a translation agency based abroad, invoices are Vat-exempt.

In fiscal year 2000 you were taxed at the following rates:

From €0 to €10,000 tax rate 18,50 %

From €10,000 to €15,000 tax r

Norway is not a member of the EU, but may be considered one for most practical/economical purposes.

VAT on services is 24%. You have to register and recieve a VAT number. Your VAT balance (recieved/paid) is reported and balance settled bimonthly. VAT only applies to turnovers in excess of NOK 30 000 (EUR 3890) per year (i.e. if you earn more than that, your entire income for that period is subject to VAT). International (export) invoices are exempt from the VAT regulations,

International (export) invoices are exempt from the VAT regulations, but VAT is applicable to imported services, e.g. if a Norwegian agency hires a freelancer living in another country for an assignment, the agency must pay the tax authorities a 24% VAT on the amount paid to the freelancer.

VAT Spain Apr 1, 2002

Quite similar to German. VAT in Spain is also 16%. You have to register and get a tax number before you can charge VAT. You charge the 16% VAT for any amount in your invoice. Quaterly, you can offset the VAT you pay on your expenses against the VAT you charge and you pay back the State all the VAT money you got from your invoices. You act as a VAT collector for the government, so to speak.

VAT in Greece is 18%. The only excpetion is for organizations that are tax exempted, so you invoice no VAT at all. Moreover, when the client pays you and you issue an onvoice, he withholds 20% of the net amount, which he pays at the fiscal srvice. This amount is deducted from the amount of tax you pay at the end of each year. The VAT is standard for all grades of income.

VAT in international invoices (EU area) Apr 1, 2002

From what I\'ve read here and there, in some countries you must charge VAT on international invoices, whereas in others you don\'t. According to the Portuguese fiscal law, translators eligible for VAT must charge it on all operations, regardless of the location of the end client (inland or abroad).

I\'d like to know how how it works in other countries.

Thanks,

João Brogueira
