I think you would say the NZ market has been relatively 'commercialised and privatised' since government restructuring in the 1980s, and is now becoming more 'internationalised' and 'professionalised'.

- The industry here is probably more commercialised and privatised than it is, say, in Australia, reflecting our relatively deregulated market and lack of government and university supported in-house translation services.
- We have seen some government-agency telephone interpreting work go to off-shore interpreters (in Australia) recently. This has led to moves to make accreditation for NZ interpreters more accessible.
- We have seen practitioners starting to talk about professional indemnity insurance, and the NZSTI is starting to talk about documented professional development requirements for its members (This is in line with moves in other professions here.)
- Since NZSTI set up its on-line directory, we have had more enquiries from international agencies 'shopping' for rates.
- As for industry structure, several NZ agencies have had an Australian branch for some time, and we have recently seen a UK agency set up representation here to recruit NZ translators.
