Dear colleagues,
I have just received this e-mail and thought I should share it with you. I guess there is no agreement about this but the funny thing for me is that they say their translators are better qualified and have got more experience than me and that is having lost my CV...so how the hell do they know what my qualifications and experience are?

"Thank you for your prompt reply. I feel it only fair to tell you that
we would be unlikely to use your services at your present rates. Our
regular Spanish translators charge us £45-£50 per 1000 source words and
have more qualifications/experience than yourself. Should you consider
lowering your rate - please let us know.
In the meantime, your cv seems to have been mislaid. Could you please
send it to us again?

Of course I have replied I am not lowering my rates.

They are probably trying to see if you lower your rates because they might have something that only fits your profile and they need you or they are just simply trying it on!!! Nobody in the UK should accept £45 per 1000 words.

Ya se sabe, si cuela, cuela...

You should not have replied at all... Dec 6, 2004

If their own translators are better qualified, I can't see why they should be interested in you at all, lower rates or not, if your qualifications are not up to scratch; or they are guessing so, because your CV has apparently gone to that prairie in the sky inhabited by "mislaid" CVs.

If they are so rude when you have not even started working for them...

hehe, nice try! Dec 6, 2004

sooo... they have vendors who work better than you (how would they know anyway?) at a lower price? why are they even contacting you then?

and by the way, how is it that they only "misplaced" your resume but not your rates and your contact details?
of course, silly me, you must have sent all that info in separate files!

looks like kindergarten-level psychology to me

why don't you tell them that you know agencies that work better than them and pay higher rates too?

I'm afraid agencies only have two options. Dec 6, 2004

Either reduce the expenses they pay their translators or the number of words if they pay by the target word.
I've seen this in a London pub today: "Thieves operate in this area, please keep your belongings with you. En esta zona operan ladrones, rogamos."
Here is a back-translation from the translation into Spanish: Thieves operate (as in surgery) in this area, please.

£45 per '000 words Dec 7, 2004

"Nobody in the UK should accept £45 per 1000 words."

Myriam, if I didn't accept £45 per 1000 words, I would have no work! I don't think I am alone. This has been my rate for the past 5 years and looks set to remain at that level.

Kind wishes

Nicholas

It is not just the translators, but also the agencies. Dec 8, 2004

Hi
No do not lower your rates, special if those are the rates you have been using the past 5 years.
I think the situation is because of the agency and not the translators, new translators is being hired and given senior translators job, and what happend, well so far as we say it in Danish " poelse snak" I believe if we pull some rules and regulation, we would be able to get awhole lot more respect in the world as translators and agencies.
If a client can go to a cheaper place, just because this agency hire new translators with 6 weeks of college course in any language, where are we and how much respect do we get? and those are they one we are up against.
