Two objections regarding TM-Town related advertising

I saw that Kevin has altered the advertisement of the Proz P on people's profile on TM-Town and a colleague just let me know that the advertisement at the bottom of our profile pages redirecting people to TM-Town has been removed!!
That's great and thank you Henry and Kevin for reacting positively to our concerns.

I can confirm that, although the outbound links in the line "More translators and interpreters: [Pair 1] - [Pair 2] - etc. [More language pairs]", are still there...

Also, pity we didn't get a reply about how the removal from the "Most Recent Posts" section exactly works, and on what basis...

Huh? My TMs are my own creation and property. I don't use other people's TMs or any other type of translation-related IP for commercial gain. That would be unethical.

I feel that it is my right to do whatever I damn well please with my client's data, as long as it stays on my computer and out of the wrong hands.


Put that on your website/business card!

Shai, you have misunderstood me completely. "Data from various clients" refers, in this case, to TMs from other clients. Let me make it simple, yet again:

Imagine you work for 20 translation agencies and a few direct clients. You might therefore have accumulated quite a few TMs, some you may have created yourself while translating, others might have been given to you by your various (agency) clients. You might also have created a few of your own TMs for your direct clients. All of this is the "data from various clients" I was talking about. Now, you might wish to search all of this data simultaneously, either in memoQ or a specialised concordance tool such as TMLookup.

And I stand my my statement:

Part of the beauty of working as a freelancer is that you get to decide how you work. Not some company. This is what I meant. If I feel like creating a massive corpus out of all my clients' data for searching on my own computer, I can do so. If I feel like installing app X on my work computer (provided it is safe, etc.), I can do so. As long as you ensure that everything you do is done in a professional, well-considered and safe manner, you are free to do so. What really annoys me is people who insist on this constant scaremongering re confidentiality, confidentiality, confidentiality, while "infringing" on their own rights as a self-employed person.

Fine, if you really believe that it constitutes a breach of some contract you signed with a client of yours (or, for that matter, that it is unethical in some more general way) to send TM-Town a random list of words, then it is your right to do believe this, however puzzling I may find it.

As a paying Proz member who is not and will not become a TM-Town member I want all links to it removed from this site, as it is actually in unfair competition to Proz members.

At the same time I wonder if a marketing expert has been asked what he thinks about an idea like creating competition between similar platforms (for paying members) you own!

And why at the bottom of a profile page (even of paying members) there's this line: "More translators and interpreters: [This translator's language pair 1] - [This translator's language pair 2] - etc. [More language pairs]", which you see only when not logged in?

And does this thread now appear among the "Most recent posts"?
Edit: NO it doesn't!

Am I paying for having competitor advertising on this site?
