I very seldom work with agencies, but a recent post caught my eye and I started thinking. This post was "Agencies: Tough application process equals little work?" I have also seen so many others regarding complaints about agency payment policies, non-paying agencies, agencies offering miserable rates, agencies requiring test translations, agencies that never bother to reply, agencies that dock translators for work with errors, and agencies with supposedly unfair practices of all kinds.
However, these are nearly all from translators; I have seen very few posts from agencies.
There are Proz members that are agencies.
To any that are out there, why is your voice silent?
I think it is very simple - good and serious agencies are not the subject of complaining (people mostly complained about those cheating or not professional agencies) and the good agencies have nothing to say. And those agencies complained about keep water in their mouth. What can they say? Confirm that they really cheat people? (maybe some of them do not even know proz)...

If they replied, they would be wearing the hat

If the hat doesn't fit, don't wear it, right? Well, if an agency replied here, maybe they would be perceived as wearing the hat, thus the hat would fit, and the agency knows this, so they refrain from posting because they don't want fingers pointed at them.
The sad thing is that if agencies came here to defend their reputations/themselves, even those that are good agencies with sound rates and practices, many of us would probably perceive them as the bad guys. In a sense, I can understand why they keep silent...

Still, hard to understand...

The discussion here in Proz seems to be so one-sided against agencies although they appear to represent the great majority of volume for most translators here. So it is obvious that there must be many good, honest agencies, and moreover it would seem that they would be interested in defending themselves and supressing those fly-by-night cheaters who pass themselves off as "agencies". I am sure many of the latter are no more than some guy (or gal) with a computer, a bare refrigerator and the rent two weeks overdue who is trying to make a "quick buck".
But why good agencies fail to come forth in their own defense is beyond me. The entire situation does not help the reputation of our profession at all. To the contrary, it undermines the confidence of the ultimate consumer in our profession.

It might be human nature that people only comment when they are upset. And if they are happy, they will not take the efforts to write anything.
One of my experiences is that I used to go to restaurants based on others' comments on the internet. The interesting thing is that generally a restaurant with the most "bad" comments is not necessarily the worst - the one with the least comments tends to be. The food/services there are so bad that it is totally neglected...
