main TM + reference
Oct 17, 2011
I use one main TM plus all other TMs I might need for the current job, but merged into one temp TM, which is read-only (discarded after the job is done). Thus, I never involve the source TMs, which are kept in archive.
The deployment process takes several minutes. I just merge the TMs I might need and make a so called working "salad".
I used to have ONE BIG TM, but the actual leverage this way is really small to none.

SSD is the way to go

Get a last-gen SSD drive if you haven't yet. A 256 gig drive with sandforce 15xx or newer will deliver 300+ MB/s seqential reads and crazy random reads. If that doesn't do the trick with the obscene amount of ram you already have, it's time to give up.
Quick update: Followed up on your advice and replaced my old hard drive with a mid-range SSD (OCZ VTX3-25SAT3-240G Vertex 3, 240 GB).
Overall performance increase is incredible. Basically, everything takes place instantaneously.
As for my 17 GB TM, I can now actually use it alongside my other TMs without Studio crashing, but to be honest it's still too slow. By the time the search is completed I'm at least half-way through the sentence.
Still, definitely worth the money imo. When I've got a bit more spare cash I'll put the same drive in my ThinkPad.
Thanks for the advice, Farkas.
Also thanks to Jabberwock who was the first to recommend SSD.
