Pros/Cons of Trados Studio 2011 / Across v5?

Hi guys,

I have to choose a CAT tool and I was wondering what you think about Trados Studio 2011 and Across v5?

What are the main pros and cons of those tools?

Which is your favourite tool and for which reason would you recommend or NOT recommend one?

Your feedback is highly appreciated.

Thanks!
Eva

It's certainly MemoQ. Feb 2

My favourite tool? It's certainly MemoQ. Unfortunately I've got much work and no time for reasoning. Search the forum and Net and you'll find plenty of reasons...

If you have to short-list only two tools, Across is an odd choice. The main (and perhaps only) good thing that can be said about it is that it's free, or "free" (you must agree to be included on their directory of Across users, which in a way forces you to look like you're endorsing their product). There are very few translators who are using Across out of their free will: most of the time, they are using it because it's a pre-condition for getting a job (hosted on an Across server). I gave Across a try last summer and I wasn't impressed. If price is an issue and you want to start with a free tool, consider OmegaT and/or Wordfast Anywhere instead.
As to Studio 2011, have a look at their forum on ProZ: it's clearly the busiest one (which at least shows many people are using it), but there is a very high number of reports about bugs, error messages, crashes and the like, compared to questions about its use (how do I do this or that in Studio). Studio can get the job done, but there are other tools that are easier to use, less expensive and will achieve the same result.

Of course, I can tell you about my favourite tools (Wordfast Classic and memoQ), and other people can tell you about theirs, but that won't help you much. In the end, *you* are going to be the one using the tool, so it should suit *your* preferences and way of working, not mine or that of anyone else. So do give them a try: there are trial versions for almost every tool out there (as it happens, Studio 2011 is the exception, you have to settle for the obsolete Studio 2009).

If/when you decide to spend some good money on a tool, you may want to have a look at this recent video of mine: http://youtu.be/dgvq2s-zymw

I'd advise CafeTran Feb 2

If you are a beginner and you don't have a lot of money to invest, but want to be flexible in terms of platform (Mac, Linux, Windows), CAT tool compatibility (SDL, Transit (coming soon)) and publishing software (InDesign, Framemaker, Word, Interleaf/Quicksilver (coming soon)), I'd advise www.cafetran.com (80 euro).

beware of "Across" Feb 2

I always refuse to work with "Across".
Not only me - many translators dislike it.

Dominique's advices are brilliant.

In my opinion, the most professional CAT-Tool is STAR Transit, but it takes some time to fall in love with it

I believe you could replace "many" with "most" or even "almost all" without distorting the truth

Dear Friend,

Can it be that you gained some extra weight, since you stopped rowing the Finnish lakes?

;P

Have a good weekend!

Hans
