Is there a CAT-tool that allows to restrict the target length?

I did a translation of strings for display on tv. Maximum string length 50 characters. I did it with Wordfast, the tool I use most of the time. This task proved difficult, because during translation it is almost impossible to see the length of the final string. Both source and target are in the same table cell together with additional characters. Only when I copied the cleaned table into Excel was I able to count the actual length. So if I would be able to define in the CAT-tool the maximum length of the target I could save much trouble. Default of course would be nonrestricted length, but if I choose I could enter a number and the targets just would not stretch more than allowed.
Is there any CAT-tool that allows to restrict the target string? How about MetaTexis. Is it possible to introduce such a function, Hermann?

Dejavu X displays in the bottom of the screen a progressive number indiating how many characters you are typing in the target cell. It is a real time counter. The character limit cannot be set, though.

I can see at the bottom of the Word-window in which column my cursor is. I never befor paid any notice to it. So there is no need to restrict the target segment. Next time I hope will be wiser. Thanks for your input!
