I know that there have been some other posts on a similar topic, but I'd be really interested to hear the perspective of Chinese users. I've used Dr Eye in the past, mostly for the instant translation feature, it's a real help to at the very least find out the pinyin for a word which I can then look up manually if I'm not confident in the suggestion Dr Eye comes up with.

Now my Dr Eye trial period is up and I'm wondering what to do? I'd be interested to hear if everyone here has gone with Trados (it seems very popular)? Or if you recommend Dr Eye, Transwhiz or Wordfast instead?? And the reasons behind your choice.

MT and CAT Apr 5, 2008

Hi Sally,

You are talking about two things here.

Trados and Wordfast are two popular CAT (computer assisted translation) software whereas Dr Eye and Transwhiz are closer to machine translation (MT) applications. Often those so called MT applications are nothing more than electronic dictionaries on steroids.

You don't need a CAT tool to do translation. However, depending on your needs, a CAT can vastly improve your productivity. No good if you charge your clients by the hour.

CAT tools can't do translation for you. For someone who has never used a CAT tool, I'd recommend starting from Wordfast. You can download a free copy from www.wordfast.net and get a taste of translation memory.

I'll leave it to other learned colleagues to advise you on Dr Eye and the rest.

Trados is perfectly easy Apr 5, 2008

I never heard of Dr. Eye and I was relunctant to use any CAT tools just two months ago until a friend of mine repeatedly urged me to learn it.

I spent one day learning it and began to use it instantly. I encountered some problems and was luckily helped out by friends. I am using Trados 7.0 now.

Anyway, no need to be afraid of the new tool, actually it's easier than Word:)

Here are some websites that I constantly use for my translation projects:

Of course, the Internet can only provide informatin for reference. But in most cases, proper use of the Internet can be quite beneficiary.

I've used Dr Eye in the past (especially when working with source texts in traditional Chinese). While I've found it helpful and a good tool for anyone working in Chinese>English translation, it has its limits. The instant translation feature doesn't always know where to break the words up (especially with abbreviations) and the dictionary isn't always up to date.

I don't have any experience with Trados or Wordfast so I can't really say much about those. I find online dictionaries and Google to be quite useful at times. Online dictionaries are not perfect but the fact that they are updated a lot more regularly than printed specialist dictionaries can make them a valuable resource.
