THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT。

notepad cooling pad Jul 26, 2008

You're right about that. But technically speaking, the bulk of the heat of a laptop is generated by the CPU.

CPU running too hot Jul 26, 2008

Alvin,

Here are a few links that explain what I was just saying. The other system components also generate heat, but they typically run at a lower frequency compared to the CPU. The main culprit of a system intermittently failing is mostly due to the CPU running too hot provided heat is really the issue.

Jul 26, 2008

Hi wherestip,

Alvin,

What you pointed out is correct. However, in many situations, there are many ways to describe the same type of product when it comes to product names in English. It's exactly for that reason I provided several links to jyuan for reference to let him pick out the term he wanted to use himself.

As you can see from the links, the names people gave this particular product varies anywhere from a laptop CPU cooling fan, a laptop cooler pad, a notebook chill pad, a notebook chill mat, a laptop cooling stand, to a laptop portable stand with USB powered cooling fan. And the list could go on. Yet all these names basically refer to the same type of product that has the same basic external cooling function.

My title was only one way I would have described such a product. As you could see from some of the links I provided the second time around after you raised the issue, people in the industry sometimes would specifically point out the CPU as the main culprit - or the main source of the problem - in referring to personal computer/laptop cooling issues. Take for example the last youtube link. In the video clip, the person was demonstrating how he cools his laptop, yet in the title he specifically referred to what he was doing as cooling down the CPU. On a side note, although his method was primitive if not outright laughable, the guy seemed pretty serious

Jul 26, 2008

Alvin Liu wrote:

Alvin,

I reread what you were trying to correct me about. The device that mounts directly on the CPU is typically called a "heatsink" in the industry, not a "cooling pad". I think that's where some of the confusion is coming from.

Like I said, sometimes there are many ways to describe a product, like this item jyuan was asking about. Other times people stick to a trade name for certain things, and if you deviate from the jargon, people would know right away that you are not in this technical field.

Anyway, "laptop cooling pad with x number of fans" or "notebook cooler pad with x number of fans" are probably more accurate descriptions for the kind of product jyuan was asking about. But if you spell out the CPU in the description as I did, people in the industry would definitely not confuse it to be the "heatsink" that directly mounts on the microprossessor. The heatsink is an essential part for ridding the heat the microprocessor generates; and it is almost always referred to by this name.

Here's a link for some laptop CPU heatsinks ...

Jul 27, 2008

Hi wherestip,

Alvin,

By the way, are you sure it's a notepad and not a notebook? It's entirely possible they make these external cooling devices specifically for notepads.
