  网络上,读者主动搜集了五花八门的各种译法,像“翻来倒去”(don't flip flop),“别走岔路”(don't get sidetracked),“别反复”(don't sway back and forth)、不踌躇(no dithering),还有翻译成“没有重大变化”(no major changes)的。

One way to express this Jan 2, 2009

I would suggest something like "refrain from capricious experimentation" or "refrain from capricious social tinkering"

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q="capricious%20experimentation"&btnG=Search

This little blurb comes from Doris Kearns Goodwin's book "No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II"

As Roosevelt approached his third inaugural, critics lamented his deviousness, his lack of candor, his capricous experimentation, his tendency to ingratitude. His character flaws were widely discussed -- his stubbornness, his vanity, his occasional vindictiveness, his habit of yessing callers just to be amiable.

“不折腾“表面看有多方面含义,其实最重要的还是讲给别人听的,希望群众能情绪稳定。

我觉得用”Buzheteng“这个拼音就很传神。

太多不说了。

Do you expect anyone who doesn't understand Chinese to know what this is?

A translator's basic function Jan 2, 2009

IMO, if it's not something like a brand name, a name, or an address, it needs to be translated according to meaning.

If President Hu's words were aimed more towards the audience at large, then I would say he probably meant "have faith and stay the course, don't cause any unnecessary problems".

我不能确定,但国家级翻译在重要场合对重要词汇的翻译一般不会胡来的。

不折腾被译“buzheteng” 或成专有名词
英语专属名词

英文解释
  Buzheteng 专有名词,胡锦涛语
  No Tossing...

Yep, that's my understanding of the term also. It definitely needs to be translated into English words IMO.

三“不”? Jan 2, 2009

President Hu Jintao's speech last week commemorating the 30th anniversary of China's reform era contained a number of quotable phrases, and the one that has received the most attention was the "three don'ts": 不动摇, 不懈怠, 不折腾.

The China Daily translated this as "don't sway back and forth, relax our efforts or get sidetracked." Op-eds and blog posts over the past week have attempted to explain precisely what President Hu meant by 不折腾, and at a press conference yesterday, State Council Information Office Minister Wang Chen offered up his interpretation:

[In response to a reporter's question,] Wang Chen said, "General Secretary Hu Jintao's important speech at the 30th anniversary of the 3rd plenary session of the 11th Party Central Committee was profound in its ideological content, but it also contained vivid language drawn from the masses. I too noticed that when the General Secretary mentioned 'don't waver, don't slacken, don't get sidetracked,' the audience chuckled in understanding, showing that they truly endorsed President Hu's words. www.danwei.org/translation/the_inscrutable_wisdom_of_hu_j.php

IMHO some idiomatic expression that was used in some "important profound ideological speech" from a higher-up doesn't deserve special treatment in the vocabulary of another language.
