Bin,

(For some reason, this link to the picture of a girl tending to her garden wouldn't work without using the image tags)

(This one either)

The Squat Position and the Prevention of Kneecap Strain

This is half-kneeling.

Bin,

I'm just kidding. Indeed people in the front row would typically half kneel.

Anyway, we're probably talking about two different things. You and your German friends must have been commenting on people's crouching - or stooping - habits in general, while I thought what stood out to you in particular was only the heel-squatting. Gathering from what you said in addition to my own imagination, this hard-to-break habit probably still exists to this day.

Over here, occasionally one could see the sign "no loitering" in some public places. Perhaps they should put up something similar where too many people stooping around becomes a public eyesore.

Heel Squatting Position
Medicine: A position of flexion of the knees and hips, the buttocks being lowered to the level of the heels; children with certain types of cyanotic cardiac defects, particularly those with tetralogy of Fallot, frequently adopt the position. Source: European Union.
