Sep 22, 2010

LV, Gucci, Prada, Daisy Garden, Armani, Fendi, Buberry

Rado

(Made in Italy, Made in England, etc., ensuring the exclusivity of the product lines).

Sep 22, 2010

Versace is another brand name that's kind of exclusive too.

Also in recent years, David Yurman could be considered one of the high-end jewelry designers over here. I would think his stuff hasn't caught on in Mainland China yet ...

Names of Some Luxury Watches Sep 22, 2010

http://www.watchexpo.com/listOutOfStockProducts.asp

http://www.bernardwatch.com/

BTW, fine timepieces typically have to be declared at customs. So if I were you, I would discourage my clients from getting too happy shopping for too many. I'm not real clear about this, but as I recall from way back when, there was a limit of only one watch per person that's duty-free. I'd also inform my clients, a kid typically wouldn't wear a $10,000 wristwatch going through customs.

Luxury Goods Sep 26, 2010

Some designer names carried by Bergdorf Goodman, a high-end department store located on 5th Avenue in Manhattan ...

Incidentally, whoever first translated "luxury goods" or "luxury items" into "奢侈品" must have completely ignored the strong suggestion of decadence - or moral degeneration and decay - traditionally associated with the Chinese words "奢侈". However, it looks like that's the terminology that stuck and entered into standard vocabulary. I assume it must have lost its negative connotation in everyday use; but to me it stiil sounds pretty awful.

In the old days ('60s and '70s), people in Beijing used to refer to this category of merchandise as "高级货", for example, "高级糖", "高级香烟", "高级点心", "高级服装", "高级手表", "高级轿车", "高级公寓" 等等 - 现在想想, 如此用词不免有点儿单调笼统. Yet in comparison, I still like the plain and simple terminology from the past much better. As a matter of fact, "贵重物品", "高价物品", or even "豪华用品", "顶级消费品" all make a lot more sense to me than the so-called "奢侈品".

Sep 27, 2010

J. A. Henckels
