Negative Ads Jun 21, 2011

No, I don't think anyone would come up with a slogan that blatantly bashes another competitor's product. Negative ads are just too mean-spirited, and are mostly frowned upon by consumers.

But factual comparisons are fair game. There are plenty of commercials that feature side-by-side performance comparisons without mentioning the name of the other brand.

However, in this new global economy, companies tend to push the envelope. Lately I've been seeing a series of Ford commercials titled "Swap your ride". They typically end with customers saying funny things like "What Honda?" after test driving a Ford. The comparisons are factual though, and the lines are mostly delivered in good humor; so I don't think Ford's competitors actually mind.

Apple Ad Jun 21, 2011

Yueyin,

Here's another funny ad that borders on being slightly negative, but IMO it's factual enough for consumers to recognize it as such.

I think as long as an ad is based on facts, it is okay. Even Microsoft would have to admit to Mac OS's consistent superior performance and user friendliness.

As to the BMW-bashing slogan that Toyota is advertising in the Chinese market, I agree with you that it crosses the line. It is indeed unethical to make broad statements like that which they could not back up. Based on the two companies' standings performance-wise and prestige-wise over in this country, we all know that the 2nd part of Toyota's slogan is false.

~*~*~*~*

Well, on second thought, it could be one of those claims that one has to refer to the fine print to make some sense of. Who knows? Toyota could have based their claim on some extraneous factors such as a cheaper average selling price or a better comparative gas mileage. Should that be the case, IMO it would still be misleading at best.

Steve,

I agree with you. It would only be fair if Toyota made the statement based on facts. As a matter of fact, Toyota did something stupid by using such an ad. Toyota tried to build itself up by bashing BMW. However, contrary to its wishes, the ad would make a potential car buyer to take BMW into serious consideration if budget is not an issue to him since Toyota has confirmed BMW’s high reputation.

The ad “宝马驾后不开其他车,丰田驾后不开宝马车" has problems not only in grammar but also in logic. It would have been acceptable if the ad had been changed to “驾了丰田就不驾其它车" although it still tastes like “plain boiled water”. It might be better if Toyota says “丰田汽车,无与伦比".

http://www.autohome.com.cn/news/200707/24389.html

Not about the road, just about the destination!”

That's for sure. Route 66 is not symbolic of luxury or materialism. Folks get on that road mainly to escape from the din of civilization, and perhaps to relive the pioneering spirit of the Old West.

I've never been on Route 66 myself. I doubt if it's very scenic either. Just look at some of the States it goes through.

Buick commercial for the China International Import Expo 2022 Nov 7, 2022

入席:[take one’s seat at a banquet, ceremony, etc.]

How to translate this Buick advertisement into English Nov 15, 2022

Buick teased its 2023 GL8 Century, a luxury multipurpose passenger vehicle sold only in the Chinese market, ahead of its release on November 3. In the days leading up to the launch event, the company advertised specific features that it felt increased the vehicle's desirability.

Three days before, Buick's social-media accounts showed off the GL8's 366-star-studded ceiling. Two days before, it was the MPV's sound system made by Bose.

A day before launch, however, a video on its online channels carried images of the minivan's signature reclining seats: "After one day, you'll be invited to sit in this chair you'll never want to leave, to enjoy freedom and experience the clouds."

Hers is the video:
https://twitter.com/o1xns/status/1589941564381724673?s=61&t=q1TgRqljbk7zb57KRP_4vw

Hers is the photo:
The chair you'll never want to leave
