Would you enter this working experience into your CV? May 8, 2002

Agree with Albertov. I also believe that you\'ve already thought over the things I\'m going to write below, but since you\'ve come to the forum with this question, here are my 2 cents:

Would you like your name to appear anywhere related to this text/movie?

Do you know all legal nuances of this work, especially if your customer is abroad?

Would you regret that you\'ve spent time on this progect, even if everybody has to start once?

Regards!

I would do it May 8, 2002

Some people see it as matter of moral values. I see it as matter of freedom of expression. Every society has diferent moral values and or ethics. This is not my subject, but if I had the expertise in terminology), hey! why not? If the material doesn\'t bother you and you can do the job, I\'d say go ahead and do it. Make sure no minors are involved or you can get in legal problems. Check the legal definitions of minors in the target countries, your country and or others. Becareful, other than that, it\'s up to you. Like I said if that material doesn\'t bother you and you can do the job, why not?

Since it is a matter of ethics, why is it not advisable? Recommendations have nothing to do with your own ethics or integrity.

You should think first ... May 8, 2002

... how you wish the world to look like. Legal or illegal is not the main focus, I believe.

Translation of adult content May 8, 2002

It\'s up to you to evaluate the original and decide whether or not it goes against your principles to translate that specific material.

Just make sure you stay safe on the legal side by not accepting any material that might get you into trouble with justice in your country and the country where you will send the translated material.

I wouldn't like it May 8, 2002

I\'ve already had such offers, but I haven\'t done it, because I had enough other jobs. I simply didn\'t like it. But if i need a job and there would be no better one - why not?!

Another question is the law in your country. German law doesn\'t forbid production and sale of such materials, so translating can\'t be a legal problem too. In a country, where porn is forbidden, I wouldn\'t translate it at all.

I have done it May 8, 2002

And I am not in jail yet, so I guess it is legal.

This can only be illegal if the material itself is illegal, so you have to be careful in this respect; as it was said before, be sure there are no minors involved. But I think it boils down to your personal beliefs. I would reject any text that glorifies racism or drug use, and I certainly would reject any child porn text, even if it was legal; but adult material does not offend me particularly. As long as only consenting adults are involved, why not? It is far from being my favorite kind of work, but it is still work.

Legal Ramifications? May 8, 2002

Legal or illegal, I am not sure. However, depending on how the translation is used, it might get you into trouble. If people use it illegally, for example, offering it to minors, they might be prosecuted and the plaintiff might want to drag you in as the co-defendant as well. After delivery, you are at the mercy of other people.

While you are at risk when provide your translation to any clients, that is why they provide professional indemnity insurance, as I see it, things can get wrong much more easily here than in other area.

Personally, I would not do it even I just sit here twiddling my thumbs.

only if you have good experience in the field! May 9, 2002

Take a look. If it doesn\'t go beyong the line of what you yourself consider morally acceptable then why not, if you need the work. But of course, how much do you know about the subject?! As a cunning linguist, you may of course be interested to take on the work out of curiosity. I got offered a \"naughty\" job once but turned it down as I didn\'t have a good feeling about the reliability of the client and besides, I have bugger all backgroud knowledge!

I appreciate yours valuable input. However, I am a Chinese living in Malaysia. I think it\'s illegal here and I abandon any job offer finally. (Malaysia recently announced herself an islamic country but no strict islamic laws conducted here actually. Malaysia is still considered a democratic country now.)

of course it is legal Jun 23, 2002

Of course it is legal to translate any thing, Hustler\'s big boss had a long fight with government in court & won (pictorial). Each culture base has its own code of ethics. So far, the problem is where the end product be published. China? US? Swissland?..etc. Might as well enjoy during your translation process.

Decide by yourself Jul 18, 2002

I had experience translating a webpage promoting \"enlarge penis pills\"? It\'s legal of course and sounds amzing.

No matter the material is erotic, political, or sensitive, translators can always judge by him/herself to take or reject the job.

As a native Chinese living in China, I do not take the assignments which attack my own country. Somebody else may like to translate it, then let them do it.
