“有一句话叫‘水净河飞’……？他接着说。
“咦，河怎么会飞？”我毕竟是写散文的，不懂这句怪话。
“不是河飞不飞，是这样的啦，”梁锡华是老广，立刻摆出权威姿态，“譬如说，
你今天到了中文大学，原来顾期会有番盛况的，谁知人影也不见一个，这时候你可以说：
“咦，真是水净河飞啊！’”
我立刻牢宁记住了这个成语，甚至不免因此还觉得几分神气，毕竟粤籍以外的人懂
这句话的也不多哩。事隔年馀，我有一天为了一篇论文来翻关汉卿的望江亭杂剧。元杂
剧的语言向来生鲜活辣，我自己午夜披卷都有时忍不住格格笑出声来，那天读到第二折，
有一句：
你休等得我恩断意绝，眉南面北，恁时节水尽鹅飞。
我正暗暗叹好，却猛然一惊，咦？这句话好熟，原来老广的那句话不是“水净河飞”，
而是“水尽鹅飞”，鹅变了河，就这样一路误传下来了。
我一高兴，干脆一不做二不休，想再找找其他杂剧里有没有类似的用语，这一找居
然大有所获，又得四条例证如下：
我则为空负了雨云期，却离了沧波会，这一场抵多少水尽鹅飞（《柳毅传书·楔子》）
可不道一部笙歌出了随，抵多少水尽也鹅飞（《杀狗劝夫二折》）
我则道地北天南，锦营花阵，偎红倚翠，今日个水净鹅飞。《云窗梦四折》）
怕不到瓜甜蜜就，少不得水净鹅飞（《雍熙乐府（四）点绛唇》）
这一来，几乎可以说是证据确凿了，元杂剧的语言是以大都（今北京）为依准，这
语言七八百年后怎么和老广相通的，倒也出奇。
记得家父有一次问我：
“我们徐州乡下过年，有些喜庆游行，里面有个节目，我们乡下人叫它‘月饼和尚
镀了翠’，大家都那么说，但说的是什么，你怎么也猜不到。”
“我知道，”我笑起来，“这一点难不到我，那是‘月明和尚渡柳翠’给念走了音。”
想来不知有多少语言多少故事在江南江北流衍，就算念走了音，错误中竟也仍然不
失其美丽。有一次听一位佛教大师说，佛经多有误译处，但从误译的地方却也自己发展
出一番教义来，真是令人称羡。
原来只要人好，情好，自有好话出口：“水尽鹅飞”固然传神，“水净河飞”也另

I had to look this up, since I had no idea what it was. The long holidays over the weeks of May 1st and October 1st must have been instituted after I left.
With its enormous population, China's the one that really should be working 35-hour weeks.

Sorry for not being clear. I meant the crowdedness should make you rethink the idea of moving back there. It certainly is the last thing I would ever want to deal with.
I was in Dallas visiting a friend over the weekend. He and his wife have it all planned out. They are talking about taking out a home equity loan on his house here to buy a property in 珠海, which he told me is a city west of 深圳, across the border from 九龙.

我明白你的意思，但人多好赚钱。上次我回上海时在南京路Häagen-Dazs店吃冰淇淋，每客80－90RMB，比美国贵多了。珠海确实spectacular，但我相信珠海的房价也一定比奥斯汀贵得多。所以若回国的话不能当翻译，只能卖冰淇淋。:)
