Any tips and suggestions regarding how to file income tax returns as freelancers in Canada will be most appreciated!

free-lancer tax issue Jun 22, 2002

Dear BBW

This afternoon, I was trying to assist you with your anxieties regarding tax issues, what happened was I felt asleep so didn\'t send your this note.

Here are my recommendation:

1. 加拿大公民若作为自由译者(而不是作为公司) 接翻译活儿, 需不需要领生意号以及开一个商业户头?you dont need to register with any agency in order for you to pay tax, since they all LOVE money, even tax authority, in fact your SIN is your tax ID number. In US, they called it: SSI: Social Security Number. In Canada: is: Social Insurace Number? a big clap or laugh to those Canadians.Just file the annual tax return.

Seems like it\'s a question that you don\'t want any one to respond. Of course not, but I do believe this is a part of your so called \"Global Income\". You should report it and submmit it with explanation page (if necessary). (too bad to be honest)

In court, the common ruling is: ignorance is of no excuse. See, how the Lord(law) is working. No matter they have T4 or not, it is your responsibility to rerport your income.

Not 减税, but operatin expenses, before you calculate & report your net income.

Rental (mortgage), Tel & Intel..communication, transport, meals, entertainments, stationaries, cleaning....etc all qualify as business expensese. The question is how to fairly separate & allocate those expenses, If you are using your home as Home office. On the safe side, 50 to 50 is a good proportion.

Best Regard

Truly Yours,

Summit

Wow! Such a complete guide! Jun 23, 2002

Thank you very much, Summit. Your superior \"all-in-one\" tax guide has swept away all my worries and concerns.

Well, again, I\'d rather use our mother tongue to fully express what I want to say in this trully helpful Chinese forum.

Who cares?

Betty

Thanks is well accepted & vice versa Jun 24, 2002

Dear BBW,

Since I worked for KPMG Peat Marwick (one of the big 4 CPA commonly known as big 8 when I joined them) for years, so it didn\'t take me too much time to respond. It\'s my pleasure.

Also, you did help me with my scrambled Chinese screen fonts (thanks to Kevin too).

I do agree with you that we should use more of our Fanther\'s Land ((Language))and combine with (Mother\'s tongue) so we all can clinge to our nostalgia during our self-exile. But please do note, my consideration toward your recommendation is as follow:

1. in Chinese forum, use what ever dialects we feel like to. May it be Shangdongness, Shaghainess, Taiwaness, Cantoness, Hubeiness..etc.

2. In KudoZ, however I do believe, just like we are going to any Sunday\'s church, it\'s much more serious. And in fact, that\'s where people can polish their apple. I myself, did learn a lot from peers (Mr. Bin Li). Even though, the question of \"To be or not to be\" and/or \" to agree or not to agree\" is really should not be the issue of any one who\'s motto of life is nothing but \"the pursuit of knowledge\"

As Professional or Free-Lancer, my opinion is : Evolution means:

I learned more about English, but mean while, I also lost that feeling of being a Chinese.

Correct! Jun 24, 2002

Summit 的意见有道理,英语还是汉语的问题,有点象 “To be or not to be” 的问题,两难之间,各有得失。

Xiaoping

I need to be ashamed of myself for being as sluggish as ever in that I always answer all the serious questions here at one time. As I stated before, in answering KudoZ questions, we do need to consider what the questioner’s best language is before deciding upon which language to use(English or Chinese).

As for your comments on “disagree”, I will clarify my way of understanding it in Chinese later.

In reality, what makes me most perplexed is not the issue of giving or being given an unpleasant “disagree”, but the embarrassment of not being given any grades at all! What happens is that I (like many others) always endeavor to bravely answer as many questions as possible not only in the English-Chinese combination, but also in the language pairs such as French-Chinese, German-Chinese, Spanish-Chinese, Chinese Monolingual, English Monolingual, and so on, the answers to which, naturally, are not always the best. In any case, I would consider this effort both a professional boon and an invaluable initiative reflecting the true spirit of ProZ.com, since we are all here to help each other... Yet, to my disappointment, many of the answers (including those of other pros’) have been left there unattended for days or months or years... I have no clue as to how long it has been, as I just joined the ProZ.com community at the end of May. But, from my experience, what I do know is that it could be at least one month. Honestly speaking, I did cast a quick glance at the list of the professionals in those areas and happily found that quite a few of them do have the qualifications for grading these answers, if not for giving answers. Therefore, I am here to reiterate :

\"Dear graders, on behalf of the pitiful answers, I am begging for your grading!!!\"

Now let me switch to the issue of \"disagree\":

Under no circumstances will I take the initiative to give out a discouraging \"disagree\" for fear of receiving one or more in return!

Best wishes from Betty(=BBW)

more explanations, please! Jul 9, 2002

Grading

Xiaoping

Hi, Mr. Fu, nice to know you here too.

Dear Betty

I am here, you are not alone\".
