詩可以這樣譯法的嗎？

昨日見某同仁網頁上引述了一首 Horace Smith (1779 - 1849) 的詩 Moral Cosmetics：

Ye who would have your festures florid,
你們啊，把自己的體態弄得做作華麗
Lithe limbs, bright eyes, unwrinkled forehead,
嬌皮嫩肉，眼神明亮，沒有起皺的紋理
From age's devastation horrid,

向時間、財富，以及命運

我和那位同仁有同樣的疑惑：詩可以這樣譯法的嗎？

翻譯常含有見仁見智的部分，但無信而追求雅，得到的結果卻是另外的一個故事。

譯出這首詩的台灣文化界人士是國民黨政工幹校出身的大棒子。在以往國民黨連中國也代表的台灣，這樣的翻譯當然不能質疑；不過大家都曉得，國民黨當今除了中國不能代表之外，連台灣也不代表，這樣的翻譯當然要受到質疑。

這首詩誤解誤譯的地方在哪裡呢？ ▲ Collapse

上頭那首詩裡可發現 ye 的翻譯前後不一致
這個英文詞為 thou 的複數形式但使用時以單數看待
因此前面譯為「你們」而後面的 ye, you 和 your 在中文裡應同樣為複數
要嘛譯為「你們」要嘛利用中文可省略主語的特性規避譯出

Adopt this plan 譯為「請採用我這不二法門」一眼可見是栽譯
Diet 確是「飲食」但不一定是「三餐」
Riot 當然也不是「散漫」

這當然與後頭的 be wisely gay 有關
但前者錯譯而後者譯為「以智慧的愉快」令人有不知所云之感

譯為「則你 可以抗拒日子的平淡 不在時間裡朽壞」
明顯可看出 resist 的對象是 decay
既非「時間裡的朽壞」也非「日子的平淡」
這是沒有弄清楚 age's fiat 所指何物的猜栽譯法
至少可以發現「平淡」是原文裡沒有而憑空捏造的
下一段的 leisure 竟然翻譯成「幸福」
那豈非樣樣皆幸福了？

最後一段的 appliance 如果譯為「裝備」則 reliance 怎會是「追隨」？
總沒有人追隨裝備的吧？
那個 calm defiance 當然也不會是「穩定的違背」
有誰讀懂最後那句「但它會挑戰到，以穩定的違背向時間、財富，以及命運。」呢？
「它」指的是 appliance 或譯者不知所云的「裝備」？
"Does it work as a translation?" (做為翻譯，它工作嗎？)
答案：「做為翻譯，它不工作！」(It doesn't work as a translation.)

前蘇聯時代外國語文的學習是受管制的
只有階級成份被當權者認定者方可學習外文
整個翻譯和文化工作都由政戰和情特機構掌控
他們說的才算數
今日幾乎所有的社會都已民主自由開放
人人都可學習外國語文
所以那些人再也無法壟斷外文的理解和轉譯
想借題發揮也得有那麼點兒本領
得先把翻譯工作做好
所以我才說：那種政工幹校的譯法，只能在威權的蔭護下冒充權威，實在不堪民主的檢驗！ ▲ Collapse

昨夜有一位朋友從美國寄來一首 e.e. cummings 的詩，他說他心血來潮就翻譯了那首詩。我一看，乖乖，果然高明！
