The best literary translators are paid a ridiculous rate of US$ 1.00 per page?at a time when there are more Mercedes 600s in Moscow than in any other capital of the world.

In other companies, translations are done by secretaries—long-legged girls hired by so-called "New Russians" as "maids for all duties," possibly with a diploma from a three-month-long English course.

"New Russians"

"maids for all duties," "打杂美眉"

“maids for all duties”多少也有些隐喻的味道。

For this, see 'maid-of-all-work'(this is the term in English, I believe) - there are Chinese translations of 'maid-of-all-work' on Google.

Thanks Seaguest. I have been translating from some of the books on my bookshelf. You can see samples on my profile...

Thank you for the good advice, Seaguest. I appreciate it.
