I was asked to make the DTP of a Simplified Chinese booklet with Freehand for Mac. I work on PC, do not have the program yet and would like to get some information about the feasibility of the project. Hope some colleague will be willing to share his/her experience with us.

I first wonder if, having already Corel and Acrobat suites, is there any chance I could work with one of those programs, import the Mac FH file into PC, write the Chinese text, outline and export all back again to FH for Mac?

Should I expect any specific problem working with Chinese in FH, is any special font required (I normally use Simsun and Simhei)?

Thank you
Raffaella

No, I don't think you will have any chance unless your client needs a PDF file only.

Being compared with Quark and Venture, FH is a friendly and handy tool to Chinese linguists. of course, you may have to deal with the "half character" problem (I am not sure whether such problem is still there), and to outline (linearize, or other similar action) all text, just as we do in Illustrator, for PDF export. if you don't, the text will not display correctly in non-Chinese environment.

as for fonts, common fonts like simsun and simhei are fine.

You can use Windows FH to open and edit MAC files without any problem. Maybe you need to add an extension name to the MAC file. before delivery, you can save it as a MAC FH file.

My info may not be accurate since I did a similar job last year but my memory failed to depict every detail now.

freehand - chinese characters problem in trial version Oct 5, 2005

Hello Donglai,
thanks for answering.
yesterday I downloaded the trial version (english, MX 11.0.2) from Macromedia web site and installed it on SChinese OS (XP).
Unfortunately I am not able to write or copy Chinese text into the text frame: I visualize only garbage, no matter what’s the selected character, including Simsun. Any special adjustment I should be aware of?

Hi! Raffaella,

I don't believe there are any special settings. Just highlight the text, then select the desired font. all chinese text should be there perfectly.

I use Trados to process FH files. First export or resave all texts into txt files and translate them in tagedit module. after translation, import all txt files back into FH and select all, change font, adjust layout as necessary, and outline them segment by segment (since Chinese text usually shorther than the English one).

If there are any special setting, please look into the preference or tool option and see whether there is any asian character support switch (I don't think there is any).

Good luck.

Hi Raffaella, Oct 5, 2005

You need a Simplified Chinese version to edit in SCH.

I do not know much about but have a good collaborator, specialist in DTP.

The best way to do things right is to do only what you best can and let what you cannot those who really can. Just like Chance does it, find some specialists and keep everything concerning their professionality in your data base. You can always find a right one for the right solution of a right job. Believe me.

problem solved Oct 6, 2005

Chance had the solution: Chinese OS and English FH are not enough, we need a Chinese OS _and_ Chinese FH version to properly display Chinese characters. Thanks for your help.
Thanks for your suggestion too, Wenjer. In general, I agree with you: let's specialist provide solutions. However, I am not thinking of providing graphic solutions myself, is the graphic specialist that is not able to deal with Chinese characters. So ... just wondering ... who is the specialist in this case ?
Cheers
Raffaella

If one of your graphic specialist should be a Chinese, he wouldn't let you down. Chance's suggestion is a hint for you to solve the problem, whereas your graphic specialist didn't know about the combination of OS and softare versions. You see, three shoemakers can be a power think-tank. This the reason why we are here.

However, my suggestions is basically a rule in our walk. We need a lot of people with different talents. I thought about talking to you when I met an interpretation problem while reading Italo Calvino. Well, that is another story. I will write you about the puzzles with Calvino's writing.

Congratulations to your solution!

Though it was solved, I would like to have you opinion.

The other questions for some other times. Thank you.
