May 4, 2006

A CORRUPTED FORM OF THE BRITISH ENGLISH,

Practicalities limit availibility in 4 languages May 5, 2006

weiwei wrote:

English is definitely the main language. However, some important information can be found in Chinese, Tamil and Malay too. Imagine a SARS health brochure in four text column - English, Tamil, Chinese and Malay....

Don't know if this is also of interest to you, but customer service at most governmental organisations also come in these four languages. You call a service hotline, and it will prompt you for the language you prefer. On MRTs, the annoucements are also made in four languages.

Denyce

Correct.

Because Singapore is a young country (came into being in 1965), the ability of the older generation in using English is rather uneven and limited.

Government pamphlets with regard to popular issues such as CPF (get-back-what-you-paid type of pension system) are likely to be available in all four official languages, and some major banks' ATMs allow selection of languages.

But sometimes the limit of practicalities steps in. For example, in the MRT system (transit trains in Singapore)[majority of Singaporeans take public transportation with schemes such as petrol taxes, road pricing, car sales tax, auction style car purchase permits to limit private vehicle ownership], the announcements in all four languages are only made in trains when approaching the interchange stations.

And, the islandwide air-raid siren [sounded each year at noon on the day Singapore fell to Japan during World War II] uses tone differentiation rather than announcements in words (time would not allow this in an emergency).

But then where else in the world can you find government hotlines available in four languages(as Denyce said)?

May 5, 2006

May 7, 2006

"Switzerland of Asia" was one of the slogans thrown up by government leaders in Singapore in the 1990s. But this did not refer to the multicultural and multilingual atmosphere in Switzerland. The aim was for Singapore to reach Switzerland's standard of living (among the highest in Europe).

Right, I learned it from the slogans of your government. The aim is only achievable when the multi atmosphere can be sustained. And it is the same vision we have in mind.
