Do you still have the backed-up files? May 7, 2006

Here is a good link from MS for this issue:

And how about logging into your English system and use System Recovery under Control Panel?

May 7, 2006

  1)进入英文版;

考虑new intallation. May 7, 2006

It is simple. May 7, 2006

1) On your English XP Desktop, double-click on the icon 'My Computer', and you're taken to Windows Explorer.

2) Find and highlight the folder 'D:\Windows.000' (or the like) and press Delete. When prompting for confirmation, press Yes to remove it completely.

3) Follow the same predecure mentioned at 2) to remove the folder 'D:\Program Files'.

4) Reboot your computer... and Voila!

It is NOT advisable for you to use Format to remove it, May 7, 2006

since, telling from your queries, you are not that literate about computers. Formatting the hard drive is too risky for you. Instead, use Delete; it is safe and easy.

Alternatively, you may as well leave the Chinese system there. A newly installed XP takes around 1Gb of hard disk space. It doesn't hurt anyway to leave it there if you do not really know how to remove it.

Also, it is possible to merge two logic drives into one. Partition Magic is one of those to do the trick. But I would suggest you should NEVER try it. Any operation error could cause catastrophic consequences.

Good luck.

Have a great week!

An option May 7, 2006

Gladbeach,

Some PC manufacturers like Lenovo/IBM have "Recovery Utilities" embedded in their offerings, especially for ThinkPad type products. My guess it would be similar for stand alone systems and other competing products.

For a ThinkPad, all one needs to do is press the button marked "Access IBM", read up on the "recover and protect" section in the pop-up menu, and then simply follow the instructions.

Another way is to use the system restore utility that comes with Windows XP. Some people already mentioned this approach in passing. I'll outline it in more detail:

Click on "start" in the task bar -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore

The panel that pops up will prompt you for the date you want to restore your system to, which in your case would be a date prior to installing the Chinese OS.

I believe either way should restore your system to the way it was when brand new. It'll also save you the trouble of having to reformat your hard drive.

************************************************

P.S. It just now occurred to me, the 1st approach mentioned above reformats the hard drive for you, and then reinstalls the factory pre-installed software. I had to do it once before.

Unless 'Recovery Utilities' recovers your system at the lowest level, May 8, 2006

As for the XP built-in System Restore feature, it is intended SOLELY for the recovery of APPLICATIONS and other programmes installed on your XP; it is an application-based recovery. It is NOT for you to remove a valid system on your hard drive. So this will NOT work absolutely.

In fact, the options for your to select a system prior to start-up speak volumes of the fact that it is IMPOSSIBLE to remove a system/platform through normal recovery. Otherwise they would be a good-for-nothing trinket.

Hope this helps.
