我是1979 年夏和小妹一起离开北京的. We still had our old U. S. passports; so proceeded to reclaim our U. S. citizenships as soon as a U. S. consulate became available in Beijing. 同样是一个罕见的奇迹！跳楼的陈景润安然无恙，只是大腿上擦破了点皮，有涔涔的鲜血冒出来。一个造反派干将，见到跳楼后平安无事的陈景润，居然这样挖苦他：
“真不愧是个知名的数学家，连跳楼都懂得选择角度！”
乾坤颠倒如此程度，本来就口讷的陈景润一时没有回答，也无须回答了。他只是用愤怒的目光盯了他一眼。在法西斯式的暴行面前，语言是最苍白的。 ▲ Collapse

北京我原单位总工程师（已故）与他妻子都是留美博士，50年代初满腔热忱携子女回国效劳，但历次运动都挨整。他的子女于70年代末去美国留学。我问他，你还希望他们学成后回国吗？他说，随便他们了。我想wherestip 的父母（原北航教授）也是如此。

七十年代末重返美国，没被国内认为是出卖国家利益、XX机密，也是万幸啊。
说到这里想起来，岂止愚民政策......

My mom and dad studied abroad in Great Britain in the 40's. And afterwards settled in the U. S.
The 4 of us were all born on Long Island, NY. I was already 8 (4th grade including 1 year kindergarten) when we got back to China. We continued to speak English at home well into our teens, mostly out of habit and convenience. So my English skills weren't entirely due to my self-studying. Well, enough of me and my past.

Nowadays, one has to wonder which side's CIA to worry about more.
I'm just kidding. The freedom of speech is intact in this country. I for one am all for them monitoring conversations for counter-terrorism purposes.
