I would like to express my great gratitude to those who made to the 'Shanghai Powwow Pre-drink' gathering: Aaron, Federica, Liang, Stonejohn and Wenjer.

Also thank Peter Stumpf to call up specifically for his 'not be able to attend' apology.

This pre-drink was an informal gathering the night before the real event, I initiated it because I unfortunately could not attend the real Powwow on the 19th.

Informal as it may, the outcome was very good I believe. We shared lots of interesting insights as well as experiences in terms of how to build up clients, what is the current situation of transaltion market in mainland China, how to start as a new freelance translator, etc.

We were also able to discuss the translation market status amongst Shanghai, Guangzhou and Taiwan; and the different demand amongst English-Chinese; Chinese-Italian; German-Chinese language pairs.

All opinions and thoughts were shared frankly, which is really a welcoming warm sign in terms of unifying Chinese related freelance translators.

Shanghai is truely a booming city and my short visit ended up with a perfect full stop. Thank you all again!

I would also like to upload a picture and do a "guess who's who" like the colleagues in Toronto did, but I really don't know how to insert a picture into the message box. Maybe someone can teach me how to do this?

Hi Pei Ling,

Thank you for the reply. However, I am not sure I understand your instruction clearly, do you mean I should upload picture to another photo album site and then link it to proz forum? I thought we could copy and paste a picture direct into topic body box here, I guess I was wrong.

Anyway, thank you.

Yeah May 21, 2007

That's what I meant. Anyway I see that Denyce would be doing the uploading so I guess I won't have to elaborate more.

Hi Martin,

We indeed had a good three hours chatting and since everyone has his/her own experience to share, we were not short of topics.

I truely believe Powwow kind of events is benefitial to all of us.

Denyce, you really should hold on your gun a bit longer. I guess this is just too easy for you.

Well, no mystery then. But I need to point out that both Stonejohn and Liang thought I was a guy ^-^.

Another Great Group Photo May 21, 2007

All I can say is everyone looks good.

BTW, the bars in China look really well-lit, very different than night clubs here in the U. S.

俱樂部? May 21, 2007

CLUB中文譯作俱樂部應該是過時了,香港人譯作會所,即聚會的場所。night clubs就是夜總會,bars 是酒巴。看來他們在會所飲酒談天,因此是燈光火著,或許是拍照的需要吧。

Cafe culture in Shanghai May 21, 2007

Thanks, Steve.

This place is really not a night club (not that I have been to any), it is a cafe/bar (called Citizen Cafe)--a common concept now a days amongst Shanghai's leisure activities. There are so many cafes, bars, tea houses, restaurants pop up everyday and to be fair, most of them are quite nice (proper lighting, tasteful interior, and good service). Some of them even have great view.

For this picture's well-lit effect, it might due to the camera flash though.
