Alleged child-rapist walks for lack of translator
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/07/22/charges.dismissed.ap/index.html

Charges against a man accused of raping and repeatedly molesting a 7-year-old girl have been dropped because the court took too long to find an interpreter fluent in his native West African language.

... ...
Prosecutors at first maintained Kanneh could understand the proceedings without translation into his native Vai, a tribal language that linguists estimate is spoken by about 100,000 people mostly in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Prosecutors pointed out that Kanneh attended high school and community college in Montgomery and spoke to detectives in English.

High school and college in English and still the court needs to find him a interpreter? My understanding is that you don't even need to take TOEFL if you finished a college program in English (is that right?).

The first interpreter stormed out of the courtroom in tears because she found the facts of the case disturbing. A second interpreter was rejected for faulty work. A third Vai interpreter was located, but at the last minute, that person had to tend to a family emergency.

Looks like court interpreting can be hard. Not for the faint-hearted I guess.

high school and community college in Montgomery

就像我的PM常常教育我的那樣﹕ This is America. This is New York.

A cat senses deaths Jul 26, 2007

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/07/25/death.cat.ap/index.html

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (AP) -- Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours.

His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means the patient has less than four hours to live.

"He doesn't make too many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to die," Dr. David Dosa said in an interview. He describes the phenomenon in a poignant essay in Thursday's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
...

Oscar the cat doesn't like to be put out in the hall when a patient is dying.

Drive through in China Jul 27, 2007

Last night I saw a great special on CNBC. Its Inside the Big Mac. The section on the Golden Arches in China was hilarious. Mcdonald's introduced drive through to the Chinese market last year. However, the report showed that at the beginning, many Chinese didn't know how to use the Drive through. They bought their big Mac and then parked their car and went inside the restaurant and sat down. The special showed one guy was quite confused after he drove his BMW through and got off his car. I thought that was quite funny. I guess Chinese are not so busy or lazy that they couldn't get themselves out of the car.

Another possibility-- Jul 27, 2007

The line at the drive-through may be shorter than the line inside. Some people may just be taking advantage of it to save several minutes of waiting.
