小曹,

美国年轻人的确很喜欢刺青和穿洞。我看到的第一个反应就是一个字“痛”。中文字变成了人们喜爱的图案。可是他他们自己不知道所选汉字的含义,再加上刺青技师不懂中文,笑话就都出来了,看着真让人心疼。

经常遇到有人请我翻译要刺青的字,很多都是女友的名字。最近的一次是“雅典娜”。我被人家的爱情动容,都不收费。可是我又常想,现在这世道,婚姻根本无保障,十个婚姻六个离。要是真分手了,那留在身上的刺青可咋整呢?这又没有长袍改马甲那么容易,下任女友天天看着心里也不是滋味。

是啊,刺青很难弄掉的,听说要用激光才行。看来只能再找一个还叫“雅典娜”的女友了。

前段时间到浙江海盐的海边玩,看到个小伙子摆了个给人纹身的摊子,还打了一句广告语:“做人怎能身无分纹”。我有照片的,过几天发上来。

改名?要让人家知道了是为这事儿,鼻子还不得给气歪的。另外,我还忘告诉你们一段。我把“雅典娜”拿给他看时,他似乎犹豫了一下,然后问我:如果只选其中一个字,哪个字最适合?我也犹豫了一下,不知如何回答。看来这小子钱紧,刺青技师也是按字收费的,比咱翻译费可高多了。也许他是为将来留了一手。

他们爱刺青,我们可以借机宣传中国文化。推荐一些“忠”、“孝”“义”“忆苦思甜”“一不怕苦,二不怕死”之类的说法,迟早会有人看懂的,永久保留,又不收广告费,反过来Kevin 还可以收点创意费什么的。

有很多刺青其实是日文

老美还没有到对中文真正如此疯狂的程度,早些年刺青的汉字基本上都是日文汉字,刺青的大多是比较前卫的年轻人,他们对日本人比较崇拜一些,不属于那种想着未来而未雨绸缪的人,所以他们不会想到汉语今后将慢慢成为主流。

其实"雅"字最保险. 单独放着也有含义, 女朋友丢了也没关系.

而且英文名字有些人昵称亲友时只用头一个单音 (syllable). 小时我们兄弟姐妹之间都是这样称呼的. 但南方大概比较累赘些, 因美国南方较为注重全称的礼节 ... Shaunna, living in NC, you probably know what I'm talking about.

刚来时花了两个月,特地说明了几次,楼里那个杂工才feel comfortable 叫我 Shaunna (此前坚持以Ma'am称呼). 礼貌到让我浑身不自在。

That's so true, Jeddie. And they're always so *proud* of them, too. They think it's such a great company man statement or something. And it probably is -- to their damn glad to meet ya kind.

I was at a meeting with a guy a few weeks ago. Had the logo'd polo on and he called me by just the first syllable of my first name throughout the entire meeting. Real casual, like he had known me forever. Another sign, at least to me, of someone's who's a total twit.

He had never met me before, but felt comfortable enough to give me a cute little nickname.
