The official U.S. holidays around this time of year are Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Private companies like the company I work for typically schedule additional company holidays when these two days fall close to but not quite on the beginning or end of a workweek. For example, last year Christmas Day fell on Tuesday; IBM designated Christmas eve (Monday) to also be a holiday. This way we all got a long weekend out of Christmas celebration.
I just looked at my calendar, New Year's Day also fell on a Tuesday, but wasn't treated the same way by IBM. One can see which holiday has more importance.
