A while ago, I thought of trying it. Among the instructions, I read that if you have "cheap" fonts installed, i.e. those that come in magazine-bundled CDs, downloadable for free, or even sold on cheap CDs, Scribus will certainly crash. It only works with "good" fonts from high-level developers such as Adobe.
As I have many of these cheap fonts, and PageMaker has never complained about them, I decided to take the developers' advice and didn't install it.
So, unless they have fixed that already, if it crashes, you'll know a likely reason.

Actually, that's true about using the fonts. Even, there is a note in their website saying that Scribus is intolerant with cheap fonts.
But still good as it is free.
