Hewlett-Packard experimenteert met een digitale camera die al fotograferend tekst kan vertalen. De afbeelding van bijvoorbeeld een woord in het Arabisch wordt via draadloos internet direct vertaald en vervolgens weergegeven op het lcd-scherm.

Hewlett-Packard experimenteert met een digitale camera die al fotograferend tekst kan vertalen. De afbeelding van bijvoorbeeld een woord in het Arabisch wordt via draadloos internet direct vertaald en vervolgens weergegeven op het lcd-scherm.
De BBC maakt melding van het initiatief van HP Labs in Paolo Alto in Californië. De omroep constateert al optimistisch dat het woordenboek in het vervolg thuis kan blijven. Zelf maakt HP op zijn site nog geen melding van het nieuwe product.
Dr Howard Taub, directeur van het Printing and Imaging Centre bij HP Labs en verantwoordelijk voor de ontwikkeling van de camera, zegt dat het ook mogelijk wordt om zinnen en zelfs complete alinea al fotograferen te vertalen. Iets wat de tourist die voor een Italiaanse uitleg van het monument staat van pas zou kunnen komen.
Het nieuwe apparaat van HP combineert een zakcomputer en een digitale camera. Afbeeldingen van de camera/pda waren nog niet beschikbaar, maar de combinatie met pda duidt er in elk geval op dat de tekst op een groter scherm te lezen is. Taub spreekt dan ook van "een iPaq met een camera". Een obstakel lijkt nog wel te zijn dat de reiziger in de buurt van een hotspot (voor draadloze internettoegang) moet verblijven.
Wanneer de camera/pda met vertaalmogelijkheid op de markt komt werd niet gemeld.

Ik heb absoluut geen tijd en moet het dus kort houden. Dit is vapourware. HP schijnt Microsoft op dit vlak tegenwoordig naar de kroon te steken.
Vooral de combinatie met Internet is hilarisch.
Wees gerust, we zijn nog lang niet overbodig en bedreigd.

So it's like a pocket scanner with Systran built in. Great if you can make do with:

Het is een zakscanner met "Systran Outside" want alles gebeurt via Internet. Duidelijk een poging om een soort abonnement te verkopen. Er zit in het hele ding niets, maar dan ook niets, nieuws.
