Right. First of all, get rid of the 'IE family' altogether. Use 'FireFox' or 'Netscape'. They're quite popular and quite safe; safer than IE, that's a fact. And they support fine and dandy in-frame PDFs.

Second, you MAY want to use a Web-based spellchecker AND word / character counter, like these two:
www.spellcheck.net and/or http://www.webworldindex.com/countcharacters.htm , namely... http://www.wordcounttool.com

Now, the trouble with the character counters is that... they "tend" to count the spaces between the actual letters as characters. So, there IS a margin of error with them... always. For instance, you have 10 characters accounted for in a sentence, but a space between the two words. So, just do the "give or TAKE" thing.

As for the trialware, well, you can always find SOME WAY to make them... freeware. Of course, if you use your company's PC, that "may" be a bit of a problem.
