I hope someone will be able to help me out here, as the following has been causing me (and others) some real headaches:

Last week, Norton Antivirus 2003 and Javascript were all of a sudden disabled, meaning that 1) I couldn't use Norton anymore and 2) sites etc using Javascript don't show anymore.
Other than that, my PC blocks very often when trying to enter a/any site, i.e. I receive the following message: This program doesn't react.

My hard- and software supplier has no clue what's causing this.
Last time (this is the THIRD time that this occurs) they spent over 8 hours trying -again- to figure out the cause (and I paid for their time) and -again- ended up by completely re-installing my (new) PC.
Apparently (this is what he wrote to me two days ago) this is due to the fact that Javascript is no longer supported by MS.

Anyway, I uninstalled Norton, ran several online antivirus programs (House Call, F-Prot, etc - uninstalled them all afterwards) and in the end bought Dr. Web SpiderMail that had detected and deleted a few rather harmless viruses (in my old C files).

I also did a complete browser security check (as recommended elsewhere - no 'leaks' whatsoever), installed ID blaster Plus, MRU Blaster, Spywareguard, Spywareblaster, etc.
Scripting, ActiveX etc are enabled.

I now ran House Call one last time. No infections.

The problem's still there.

Would anyone be able to help me out here? I use I.E 6.0 on a Compaq Pentium IV.

Many thanks in advance!

a few questions Dec 16, 2003

Hi Evert,

1.Have you recently downloaded any kind of software on your pc, if yes: which software? My guess is that you've got a registry key blockage. Try to download adaware from lavasoft. This should detect any spyware on your pc.
2.If you have imesh or kazaa, remove them because gain/gator sometimes causes conflict problems for Norton.
3. Assuming that you've got a legal version of Norton Antivirus, contact Norton for free support.
If you let me know your pc configuration: operating system, connection type, and size of partitions and any downloaded software, I'll try and give you some more advice.

Good luck.
Linda

Hi Evert,

Are you 100% sure about the message you receive? There's not even one Google hit for 'This program doesn't react' and just one for 'This program does not react.

Good luck,
Gerard

remedy for your headache or not? Dec 16, 2003

Hi Evert,
I hope maybe these small tips can help you out. We (me and my husband)have studied your case, but it's hard to say from a distance what's really wrong.

First of all: GET RID OF NORTON! Sorry for all Norton lovers, but due to my experience (and mostly that of my husband as computer technician) I can assure you that Norton is creating all kinds of conflicts with all kinds of programs, so just forget it if you're using many different programs. There are many other good programs available for virus protection and firewall (I am actually using the rather less known Panda, but it's very good). It's quite possible that Norton is causing your problems. I had a few myself on my laptop which I use for testing.
After uninstalling Norton there will still be some files left in your registry which could cause the problem. Go to your registry: Start/Run(Uitvoeren) and type "regedit". Perform a search for all files containing the name "norton" and delete them. This could take a while. If you have a PC cleaning program you might want to use this for this task.

Reinstall Javascript. You can download this on the site of MS (yes!!)We don't think the problem is due to the fact that java is no longer supported by MS, because we are also using both programs together without any problems. If you have a problem I can mail the program to you, but it's rather large so just let me know.

Update service packs (2) for IE on the Microsoft site if you haven't done this already. This might not be necessary, but it's always better to have the latest version.

Anyway, I sincerely hope this has given you some more information, and will eventually solve your problems and headaches. Ever thought of giving your computer an aspirin? Maybe that will help...

Have a nice and "relaxing" evening,
Chantal

Norton Dec 16, 2003

Hi,

my partner and I both work in IT and we would not advise you to uninstall Norton due to the number of viruses found on the Internet. At this moment, Norton is still the best antivirusprogram available. It is the only program that offers removal of the wormblaster virus. The top three IT companies (IBM, EDS and Microsoft) use Norton antivirus software and they use lots of different software as well. Before uninstalling Norton, check with Norton as to possible configuration problems with your pc.

Concerning the Service Packs, you put in your description that you have IE 6.0, at the moment there is only one service pack for this version. You can always download that one directly from microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp

Let me know how it works out.

Good luck,

Linda and Chris

And I just ran a new scan.
Only one regkey that I quarantined (Alexa regkey). Problem not resolved!
I don't have imesh or kazaa and, yes, I have a fully registered Norton 2003 version, but just try once to get support from them thru Symantec!

As for Gerard's note:

I literally translated the Dutch: 'Dit programma reageert niet. Klik op Annuleren als u terug wilt gaan naar Windows en de status van het programma wilt controleren.'

As for Chantal: I completely uninstalled Norton and couldn't find any remaining Norton files (as you suggested).
I have used Panda, AVG, McAfee and others (as mentioned above) in the past, and actually like(d) Norton, but this is the third time now, and my fondness of N. is melting like hell;)

Linda en Chris, I also downloaded the Service Pack you mentioned, but "All most recent versions of all items are already installed." I was then advised to close Setup without newly installing anything. I did.

And yes, the problem persists...

But a sincere thanks to all of you for your help!

Scan Online by http://www.bitdefender.com/index.php Dec 17, 2003

Hi Evert,

Have you deleted all Internet temporary files and cookies ?

It looks like one file infected by "JS Trojan.Winbomb.F" by which I had been troubled a few days ago. Try Scan Online at: http://www.bitdefender.com/index.php.

Bon courage et bonne chance !

Couldn't do a scan online, as the screen was blank, due to Javascript being disabled...

Thanks for the tip, though!

BTW: How many partitions do you have in your PC?

I made 4 partitions in mine: C: Win98; D: Win XP; E: Files; F: Downloaded software.

XP for daily working, but when I have some problem, switch to Win98 for PC based virus scan or online scan, thus I could have avoided some catastrophes and PC reformatting. Generally, today’s viruses attack Win XP and 2000 more than 98. And also, as 98 is not used daily, it has less chance to be infected.

Thanks for the info!

I already know I had a nasty hijacker running on my PC, thanks to some excellent advice given to me by someone at computercops.biz.
I deleted the 'thang' (refixed') and as a result my pc is now running smoothly again (no more blocks etc), but Javascript still doesn't function properly (i.e. definitely not working all the time)

So, if you can specify a time between Friday (19/12)and Sunday (22/12), just send us an e-mail and he can help you solve your problem or identify what you need to do next.

As for now, good luck!!!
