If the file is not protected you can copy and paste it in a word document. The latest version of acrobat reader also allows to save the file as .txt. Then you can copy and paste the text once again in a word document
best wishes

The topic of working with PDF files has been discussed at great lenghts - just use the search function, and you'll find numerous threads dealing with various aspects (including word count, IIRC).

Best regards, Ralf

A more general question, even Jun 24, 2004

Is there a way to count words in a PDF file if the text is split into two columns on pages, and some words are divided with hyphens? Or, in other words, is there a way to make a Word file from the initial PDF, automatically?

Hello,

I downloaded Total assistant from Surefiresoftware and am quite happy with it as it works with all kinds of files, even PDF.

Go to www.surefiresoftware.com/totalassistant to download a free trial.

Best regards.

a simple, but effective way Jun 25, 2004

1. open the document in Acrobat Reader
2. File/Save as "rich text format" (rtf)
3. double click the file created (xxx.rtf)
4. Your MS Word opens it.
5. Now, you can count the number of words in MS Word.

The whole process tooks less than a minute.

Hi, Selçuk. I followed this procedure but it doesn't work at all. First, the function "Save as" of my Adobe Reader does not include the option "rtf", only "pdf". If I save it as a "rtf" in the name field, the file is saved as *rtf but it also includes tons of garbage codes, without relationship to the original *pdf file. What could be wrong?

Regards,

Clarisa

sorry for misleading, and here is another solution Jun 25, 2004

Sorry for misleading you.

It works with Acrobat, and not Reader.

Here is another alternative that I just tested.

There is a tiny program called "Translator's Abacus"

It is small, requires no installation, and fast!
Just download and unzip.

URL:
http://www.globalrendering.com/download.html

Tested with a PDF with the following results:

Total Word Count 12812 (this is abacus count)
Total Word Count 13050 (this is MS Word Count after
converting to rich text format)

I guess that this difference comes from the way in which MS Word treats words. i.e., it counts numbers as well.
